Providence is a series that premiered in 1999. It was a medical drama TV show that was created by John Masius. It reaped a fairly wide success within the public, lasting five seasons and 96 episodes. The producers wanted to make a sixth season, but the actors themselves agreed to leave it after the fifth season it was time to close the story.
The plot is about Dr. Sydney Hansen, a plastic surgeon for wealthy families in Beverly Hills. She decides to leave everything to return to her hometown and live with her family. Sydney deals with various problems of everyday life while interacting with the ghost of her dead mother, her father, and her siblings.
Over the last two decades, the cast of the series has moved on to other projects. Here’s where the cast of Providence is today.
Tessa Allen as Hannah Hansen
Tessa Allen was Hannah Hansen in the series. She was Joan’s youngest daughter. Although she had a minor role as a character, she was always seen being cared for by her mother, aunts, uncles, and grandfather.
Tessa Allen was involved in a few projects after Providence. She was in an episode of CSI: Miami, and played Lulu Spencer in 23 episodes of General Hospital being her most outstanding performance. In addition to that, she participated in the 2008 Little Canyon and Arcadia movies in 2012. She has not been seen on screen for more than 10 years.
Maria Pitillo as Tina Calcaterra
Maria Pitillo played Tina Calcaterra, Pete’s divorced mother. She meets Robbie while on her way to her son’s field hockey game, and they begin to have a more solid romance in later seasons. They later marry and have Nick. She was always welcomed by Robert’s family because of the change she represented in his troubled life.
Pitillo had been active in the industry since 1986, participating in multiple series and movies. Although Providence had been her most prominent role, after 2002, she greatly lowered her on-screen notoriety. In fact, she only appeared as a guest in episodes of Friends and Big Shots. Currently, she’s a retired artist, and not much is known about her life in recent years.
George Newbern as Owen Frank
George Newbern’s character was lawyer Owen Frank, who defended Sydney in her malpractice suit. It’s during the last season that he has a more significant appearance, where he develops a love bond with the protagonist, and at the end of the series they get married.
Since 2002, Newbern has participated in multiple series and movies and has not stopped playing roles. Among some of his most important works are playing Superman in the superhero productions of Justice League Unlimited and The Batman. He also played Dr. Al Pollack in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In terms of movies, he reprised his role as Superman in Batman: Gotham Knight, Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam, Superman vs. The Elite, and Justice League vs. The Fatal Five.
He was also in Buffalo Dreams and Saw VI. Also, among his most current projects, George Newbern was in Father of the Bride, Part 3(ish),Reboot, Close Enough, and Record of Ragnarok.
Dana Daurey as Heather Tupperman
Dana Daurey played Heather Tupperman, Jim’s assistant in the series. The most significant moment of this character in the series is when she is about to marry Charlie, and then goes with Robbie to Las Vegas.
After this project, Daurey took on various roles and remained active in the industry today. During the 2000s, she participated in Bewitched and Prank and made a guest appearance in the sitcomHannah Montana. In the 2010s, she stood out for her participation in films such as Lucky and Broken Blood. She also appeared in the series Perception, American Horror Story, and Robot Chicken. In recent years, she was in Stan the Man and The Neighborhood.
Leslie Silva as Helen Reynolds
Leslie Silva played Helen Reynolds, Syd’s friend in the first season and the one who ran the clinic. She leaves the series, returning to her hometown, leaving the clinic in Syd’s care.
After leaving the series, Silva continued in TV roles. She played Sarah Forbes in Odyssey 5 and M.E. Ridenhour in Numb3rs. She also appeared as a guest in series such as Star Trek: Enterprise, Cold Case, and The Good Wife. She played Gail Baker in Shades of Blue.
More recently, she was in In the Dark and Women of the Movement. This year, she was in Poker Face and played Beverly Crest in So Help Me Todd.
Mike Farrell as Jim Hansen
Mike Farrell portrayed Jim Hansen. He was the father of the main character and a veterinarian. Jim maintains a very good relationship with his children and is always seen tending to animals for his work.
Mike Farrell was not only an actor, but also a political activist during the filming of the series, and still is. After Providence, Mike was in the Superman:Brainiac Attacks and Out at the Wedding. He was mainly noted for having been in many series in these last decades, such as Justice League, Larry King Live, and Desperate Housewives. He was also a guest star in Supernatural and Ghost Whisperer. More recently, he played David Rogers in The Red Road, in addition to appearing in American Crime Story and NCIS.
Concetta Tomei as Lynda Hansen
Concetta Tomei played Lynda Hansen. She was Sydney’s mother and had a personality quite clashing with that of her daughter. In the first episode, she dies and becomes a ghost, constantly appearing to Sydney. As the story progresses, we see that she had a very bad relationship with the protagonist in life, which unleashes multiple comical situations, and others quite deep and uncomfortable.
After 2002, Tomei remained active in the industry. She was in View from the Top and The List, though she became more recognized for having played guest roles in series. Concetta was in Judging Amy, The King of Queens, Numb3rs, and Cold Case.
Seth Peterson as Robert Hansen
Seth Peterson’s character was Robert Hansen, Sydney’s younger brother. He is addicted to gambling. He used to get into a lot of trouble easily, although Tina’s character represents a positive change in his life later on, eventually developing a loving bond with her.
After the series, Peterson appeared in multiple projects of various types and genres. He was in Shotgun, Spoonaur, Hate Crime, and Sedona, to name a few movies. He guest starred in Charmed, Deadwood, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and CSI: NY. His most recognized role in recent decades was that of Nate Westen in Burn Notice.
Paula Cale as Joan Hansen
Paula Cale’s character was Joan Hansen, who was Hannah’s mother and Syd’s sister. She was originally going to marry Richie, but the wedding was interrupted by the death of her mother. Subsequently, she gives birth to Hannah and decides not to marry. Thus, during the seasons, she tries to do right by her family, although she tends to argue a lot with Syd’s views and personality.
After Providence, Cale appeared in several projects over the years. She was in series like Ghost Whisperer, Twins, and House. She also appeared in Twenty Good Years and Pretty Little Liars briefly. As for movies, she was in In the Game and Living Proof. Her most recent works were 2014’s Cake and 2020’s Witness Infection.
Melina Kanakaredes as Sydney “Syd” Hansen
Melina Kanakaredes was the protagonist of the story, playing Sydney Hansen. Her character was that of a plastic surgeon who was very good at her job and decided to return to her hometown to live with her family. She works at her friend’s clinic and ends up running it while trying to rebuild her life. We observe how she faces different situations on a personal, family (with her siblings and father), and professional level, and tries to balance them.
After her starring role in Providence, Kanakaredes managed to build a solid career in the industry. She participated in the films Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Snitch. She was mainly known for her role as detective Stella Bonasera in the series CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. She also participated in the series Extant and Notorious.
Her most recent works are those of Dr. Lane Hunter in The Resident and in the Greek mythology production Blood of Zeus as Ariana in 2020.
