The official synopsis for Mob Land reads as follows:
“Deep in the heart of Dixie, in a small town struggling with the ravages of addiction, a local sheriff tries to maintain the peace when desperate family man Shelby robs a pill mill with his reckless brother-in-law, Trey. But the supposedly easy score takes a violent turn, alerting the New Orleans mafia’s revenge-seeking enforcer, who threatens Shelby’s wife and daughter. With its unpredictable twists and turns, Mob Land is a heart-pounding, action thriller.”
Written and directed by Nicholas Maggio, in his feature film directorial debut, Mob Land stars Academy Award nominee John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Grease) as local sheriff Bodie Davis, with the rest of the cast including the likes of Shiloh Fernandez (Evil Dead) as Shelby Connors; Kevin Dillion (“Entourage”) as Trey, Caroline’s brother and Shelby’s brother-in-law; Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”) as Caroline Conners, Shelby’s wife; newcomer Tia DiMartino as Mila Conners, Caroline and Shelby’s daughter; and Stephen Dorff (Blade, Old Henry) as Clayton Minor, an enforcer for the New Orleans mafia.
Mob Land Was Inspired By a Real-Life Encounter, Director Nicholas Maggio Reveals
Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb’s own Greg Archer, Mob Land writer and director Nicholas Maggio revealed that the movie is in fact based on a real-life encounter that he had with a group of avid muscle car fans in northern Alabama several years ago.
“It wasn’t totally new to me, but it was a side I hadn’t seen before. And they were taking me to all these small towns where they’re from,” he explained. “So, I knew I wanted to write a story that revolved somewhat around these guys, and this idea of what the American Dream is, and what it means to them. It’s definitely fictionalized, and I ran with it. I mean, my buddies in north Alabama are not hooked on pills and run clinics. But it is something that, you know, they probably have friends who do.”
Maggio also could not help heaping praise on acting legend John Travolta, who wanted to dig down into why the filmmaker decided to tell this story.
“John read the script, and he expressed to me that it was something he could see himself doing,” Maggio said. “I had a couple of conversations with John and as a first-time director, I think some people grilled me a little bit, wanting to know things. I got very different questions from everyone. But John wanted to know what I was going to do with the film, and why I wanted to make it.”
Saban Films released Mob Land in theaters earlier this month on August 4, with the action thriller scheduled for digital release today, Aug. 25. You can watch the trailer below:
