Many fans were disappointed that Spider-Man: No Way Home was not nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, although it did receive a nod for Best Visual Effects.
While Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the most successful films of all time, garnering universal acclaim from critics as well as huge box office winnings, was not considered Best Feature Film in the eyes of the Academy. The full list of nominations for this year’s Academy Awards was revealed on Tuesday. While it’s not uncommon for superhero movies to fall short in the Best Picture category, many Marvel fans hoped that No way home would be the exception in light of his accolades.
That turned out not to be the case, although one of the surprise stars still landed an impressive nomination. Andrew Garfield, who reprized his role as Peter Parker from The Amazing Spider-Man in No way home, was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Tap, tap… Boom!† Speaking about his nomination with The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield was asked about the outcry from fans for: Spider-Man: No Way Home be excluded from the Best Picture race. Here’s what the actor had to say about that situation.
“I am unable to comment on that, in particular. I really like that movie and I really like Amy [Pascal] and Jon Watts and Kevin [Feige] and of course Tom [Holland], and Zendaya and Jacob [Batalon] and Tobey [Maguire] and the entire cast. That movie was kind of a juggernaut of proportions that I don’t think any of us really expected. I can only speak for myself and I’m just grateful to be a part of something that keeps cinemas alive right now, keeps cinemas full and helps with that and makes the live experience or the communal experience of going to the cinema remains intact. It’s very, very cool to see that the audience still deeply craves what I know we all crave deeply. I think Spider Man is obviously one of those movies right now and that’s so cool, and I’m so, so grateful to be a part of that.”
