A new trailer has been released for Ted K, Super LTD’s upcoming thriller inspired by the gruesome real-life crimes of the Unabomber. In Ted K, directed by Tony Stone, Sharlto Copley plays Ted Kaczynski, the man identified as the notorious criminal. The film also stars Drew Powell, Amber Rose Mason, Travis Bruyer, Megan Folsom, Andrew Senn and Keith Barber. You can watch the trailer below.
The summary for Ted K reads: “Deep in the American Rocky Mountains lived a man who sought refuge from modern society. His dark writings warned in advance of a society ruled by technology. As the outside world invaded his mountain reserve, he slowly radicalized with anger. Beginning with petty acts of sabotage, culminating in deadly bombings, national media coverage and the largest manhunt in American history, actor Sharlto Copley brings dark intensity and unnerving intimacy to this chilling portrait of America’s most notorious and enigmatic terrorist.”
Sharlto Copley is an accomplished actor and it shows in the Ted K trailer he will do a phenomenal job as the Unabomber. He is also known for playing the titular character in chappie; Wikus van der Merwe in District 9; Crying Mad Murdock in the movie reboot of The A-Team; Agent CM Kruger in Elysium; James Corrigan in Europe Report; and King Stefan in rogue. The actor also starred in the TV series powers.
The Unabomber’s story has inspired other adaptations
The true story of the Unabomber has been told in various media and various actors have played Kaczynski in many projects. Saw franchise star Tobin Bell played Ted in the television movie Unabomber: the true story which aired on USA Network in 1996. WandaVision star Paul Bettany later played another incarnation of him in the Discovery Channel miniseries Manhunt: Unabomber in 2017. The R-rated Ted K appears to be the darkest take on the story yet, in part because it follows the path of events from Kaczynski’s point of view.
Ted Kaczynski, classified as a domestic terrorist, has been confirmed to have killed at least three people between 1978 and 1995 while wounding 23 others in a series of bombings. One of the reasons he had gone unidentified for years, known only as the Unabomber, was because he lived like a total hermit in a remote hut with no electricity or running water. He was finally caught in 1996 and sentenced to eight life sentences with no chance of parole.
Currently, Kaczynski is spending his time behind bars, where he has spent more than two decades. The former Unabomber retains his penchant for writing and reportedly regularly writes thousands of letters to outsider pen pals, a stark difference from the extremely private life he led before. The cell he sleeps in isn’t much smaller than the hut he lived in as a hermit, and he’s apparently adapted quite well to life behind bars.
Ted K will be released digitally and in theaters on February 18, 2022.
With the miniseries A Small Light, Nat Geo tells the story of the people who hid the Anne Frank family and kept her diary.
