It’s been a long time since the unlikely combination of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito brought Twins to life led by Ghostbusters helmer Ivan Reitman, and despite countless rumors over the past three decades, it seemed like we’d never see the duo on screen together again for a sequel. However, last month it was made official that triplets would bring the unlikely siblings back to the screens with a new brother in the form of Tracy Morgan – who seemingly signed on to replace the intended shot of Eddie Murphy – all again led by Reitman.
While the film’s main characters may be older, they are certainly not ready to act their age, as evidenced by a video from Arnold Schwarzenegger an attempt to prank his little co-star with a cigar that wasn’t everything it seemed. Although the filming of the film will not start until next year, the stars have already gathered, along with Reitman, to promote the launch of the film. Along with a video of the attempted joke that surfaced, Schwarzenegger described the whole thing in his recent newsletter.
“This month I also came together with my boyfriend Danny DeVito to promote our movie triplets!” Terminator actor Arnie wrote. “Ivan Reitman, our director you know from Twins, Kindergarten Cop, and Ghostbusters, wanted to bring us together via Zoom with our new, third brother, Tracy Morgan. Of course, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to recall a prank Danny played on set all those years ago. Twins. You may remember the story about Danny putting marijuana in my cigar. Well, this time we’ve turned the tables! We waited until the end of the shoot and gave Danny the gift. But unfortunately he still has the nose of a bloodhound and immediately sniffed the special ingredient. Here’s the video where I hand him the cigar. I’m still waiting for Danny to send me the video of him trying it out later that night.”
Last month, Reitman spoke with Deadline about how the idea for triplets began with a meeting between great Arnie and Murphy. “Twins was quite successful, and some years later this all started with Arnold meeting Eddie Murphy, and the suggestion came from one of them,” Reitman said. “It was, ‘I should be triplets, that could be a really funny comedy to be .’ We started a script with Eddie, and after the success he had with Amazon Prime on Coming 2 America, he got himself heavily booked. And we knew we were going to make it early next year. I had been good friends with Tracy Morgan for a long time and always thought he was one of the funniest men in the world. I thought he would make a great triplet, and we rewrote the whole script for him. Now we’re going out and trying to get the money together and make it earn.”
Twins was a worldwide hit for Universal, bringing in $216 million in 1988, and while it seemed like a certainty for a sequel, Reitman also explained that the movie never happened because a sequel had to be made very soon, and Universal didn’t risk it. wanted to take because they felt the sequel wasn’t developed enough at the time. “In terms of future rights, Universal had very restrictive secondary rights to sequels,” he explained. “They had to respond very quickly to it, which they didn’t, because we hadn’t really developed it.”
Of course things have changed now and there is a plot in the new movie, which Reitman explained in the same interview. “Secretly, a third baby was born, a black baby, who had no contact with his siblings,” explains Reitman. “They don’t know each other and they meet very early in the film and that’s how they bond after all these years. It’s really a movie about family and no matter how different we are, we have to learn to have these guys great chemistry together, and you can see that in the reel, and how much energy they put together.”
It’s clear from the short prank video that he’s not wrong, and his original leads still have the ability to bounce on each other and that can only mean good things for triplets. With so many late sequels tapping into a huge wave of ’80s nostalgia, the film could well be next in line to become another major revival hit when it arrives, expected sometime in 2023.
