Netflix has now confirmed with CNN that squid game officially set the record for the “largest series ever at launch,” with a reported 111 million accounts tuned in since its premiere last month.
For comparison, Bridgerton was definitely a big hit for Netflix when it first came out on Christmas Day, but it still didn’t come close to this one squid game numbers. Bridgerton was viewed in 82 million households in its first 28 days, which is obviously a huge success. Still, squid game has far surpassed those numbers, and in less time to boot. It still reigns supreme as the #1 show on Netflix in 94 countries around the world and the first-ever Korean series to reach #1 in the United States.
According to CNN, there are a few more factors to consider in addition to this announcement. These words come directly from Netflix and are not researched by third parties or outside sources, as the company keeps all that information internally. The 111 million figure also doesn’t just include those who managed to watch the entire series, it counts everyone who watched at least two minutes of the show. Still, it cannot be denied that the popularity of the series is enormous.
“When we first started investing in Korean series and movies in 2015, we knew we wanted to create world-class stories for key K content fans in Asia and the world,” said Minyoung Kim, Netflix vice president of content. for Korea, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, CNN told CNN. “Today, squid game has broken through beyond our wildest dreams. squid game gave [Netflix] more confident that our global strategy is moving in the right direction.”
squid game is one of those shows that is hard to summarize and you really have to see it to believe it. Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, it revolves around a deadly game in which hundreds of participants play children’s games with the caveat that they will actually be killed if they lose. While the players are aware of the risks, the idea of getting out of deep debt is what motivates them to continue. It is unique and certainly leaves quite an impression on the viewers. Critics love it too with a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
About the inspiration behind the series, Dong-hyuk told Variety: “I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts extreme competition, a bit like the extreme competition of life. But I wanted to use the kind of characters we all met in real life.As a survival game it is entertainment and human drama.The games depicted are extremely simple and easy to understand.This allows viewers to focus on the characters, instead of distracted by trying to interpret the rules.”
Of a possible follow-up, the director added: “I don’t have any well-developed plans for Squid Game 2. It’s pretty exhausting just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I certainly wouldn’t do it alone. I’d consider using a writer’s room and would like multiple experienced directors.”
