It’s a ball-the-wall action extravaganza in the first trailer for Cop shop, while hard-boiled Hollywood men Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo go head-to-head. Both actors have made careers in blatantly explosive action movies, and it looks like bringing the pair together for the first time has led to something pretty wild.
Screaming across the Nevada desert in a bullet-ridden Crown Vic, cunning con man Teddy Murretto (Frank Grillo) devises a desperate plan to hide from deadly hitman Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler): he leads rookie officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder) astray to get arrested and locked up in a small-town police station. But prison can’t protect Murretto for long. Viddick plots his own way to detention, bidding his time in a nearby cell until he can complete his mission. When the arrival of a competing assassin (Toby Huss) causes utter chaos, mounting threats force Viddick to get creative if he wants to get the job done and escape the explosive situation.
Of Gerard Butler as Viddick, a professional hit man and Frank Grillo as Teddy, a con man, Cop shop seems full of ridiculous characters, lively title screens and loud action sequences, which will hopefully all come together and result in the perfect kind of over-the-top B-movie-style action romp. Thanks to the presence of both Butler and Grillo, the gray grit on display will no doubt provide a great testosterone-filled knuckle sandwich for the faces of action movie fans everywhere.
Aided by The Gray director Joe CarnahanCopshop has undergone several rewrites over the years, with Kurt McLeod writing the original screenplay, which is based on a story by McLeod and Mark Williams. Carnahan, meanwhile, is behind the most recent version. With Alexis Louder as Harper, a novice cop, Toby Huss as Anthony Lamb, a mobster, Ryan O’Nan as Huber, and Kaiwi Lyman-Mersereau as Barnes.
Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo have discussed the project in the past, and the pair say in a joint statement; “We believe this is a film that can play big globally but be made sensibly, and we’re always looking for this kind of ‘exalted genre’ where the writing really drives the action and drama. We wouldn’t either. could be happier to have someone with Gerard Butler’s box office power as our partner in crime for this film.”
Apart from chewing on the landscape in Cop shopGerard Butler has several big action movies in the pipeline, including sequels to both the Olympus has fallen franchise, and for the gritty crime thriller of 2018 den of thieves. Butler also returns to the post-apocalyptic world of Greenland in the upcoming sequel Greenland: Migration, in which the Garrity family leaves the safety of the bunker and embarks on a perilous journey through the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.
As for Grillo, who has become known for roles in The Purge: Anarchy and warrior, he too will continue to fly the action movie flag with people like The passage, A day to die, and MIA. Cop shop is scheduled for release in the United States by Open Road Films on September 17, 2021.
