The Goonies 2 will probably never be made, but Corey Feldman says there’s still a “golden chance” that the sequel will see the light of day. The original film, directed by Richard Donner and released in 1985, starred Feldman alongside Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan. The adventure film is one of the most popular titles of its time, but despite its success, an official sequel has never been developed.
Over the years, Donner had teased The Goonies 2 along with Feldman and other cast members. The odds of it happening seemed to plummet when Donner announced his plans to make Deadly Weapon 5 as his last film, as the goonies cast was only interested in returning once Donner was back at the helm. That’s no longer an option at all after Richard Donner’s death at age 91, making it seem like both The Goonies 2 and Deadly Weapon 5 are permanently stored.
In a new interview with Movieweb, Feldman raised hopes The Goonies sequel, though he admits the chances are pretty slim. Recently met former child star Mel Gibson, who Donner knew from working on the Deadly Weapon movies. Speaking of potential sequels to their respective films made with Donner, Gibson said he could potentially direct Deadly Weapon 5, and when that happens, Feldman thinks it could lead to: The Goonies 2 also.
“One of the things Mel said to me because we started talking about Deadly Weapon 5 against goonies 2 and that whole debacle, and I said I knew there was no way he could have gotten out of it… deadly 5… So, Mel says to me, ‘Well, you know, people have said maybe I should direct it.’ And I said, ‘You must! That would be great.’ So who knows. The point was, maybe this will encourage Mel to take the helm and direct Deadly Weapon 5, and maybe one of us will be inspired to take the helm and direct The Goonies 2.”
That’s not to say Feldman would want everyone to just step into the director’s chair for The Goonies 2. From his point of view, the sequel could work without Donner, as long as it’s directed by someone else who understands the film, especially one of the original cast members. Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, who co-created the story, could also potentially direct the project. Aside from the original cast and crew, Feldman thinks The Goldbergs creator Adam Goldberg is the only other director who could make it happen.
“It could happen, you never know. But if it did, it would have to be one of the cast members or it would have to be like Steven [Spielberg] or Chris [Columbus]. Or maybe if there was some sort of pre-existing similarity between Dick and Adam Goldberg, because I know Adam Goldberg had just met him to pitch goonies, so if they happened to write some sort of deal where Dick passed the torch and Adam could prove it, then maybe that could work. But that would be as far as I’m willing to stretch.”
It is best not to bet on The Goonies 2 ever happens, and the same can probably be said for: Deadly Weapon 5. Still, for fans who want to see these sequels, it’s good to know that all hope is not lost yet. You can watch our full interview with Feldman on YouTube.
