SYFY has released the trailer for the new version of George A Romero’s Day of The Dead. The new series will be released on SYFY in October and will be a brand new series based on Romero’s classic zombie film of the same name. Revealed as part of [email protected], the trailer gives a first look at what to expect from the long-awaited full-length story, and it seems like an absolute blast of blood, gore, and tribute to the master of the genre.
Day of The Dead TV series follows six strangers trying to fend off zombie hordes on the first day of an undead apocalypse. Like many popular franchises featuring the walking dead, the series will once again prove that there’s nothing that can bring together otherwise unlikely allies than the threat of being eaten alive by a few rotting corpses. The series stars Keenan Tracey, Daniel Doheny, Natalie Malaika, Kristy Dinsmore and Morgan Holmstrom, while Steven Kostanski serves as executive producer and directs the first quartet of episodes.
“Well, I can honestly say that the experience on set for that show was such a scrappy low-budget adventure that it definitely felt like how I imagined Romero felt in the ’70s movies, where it was a lot of real thinking was about our feet and seeing how we can stretch our budget as much as possible,” Kostanski told ComicBook.com earlier. “It’s a very low-budget affair, but we pushed really hard to have as many crazy jokes and stuff as possible. I can’t explicitly give details about the plot or anything like that. It’s not really my place to put those secrets on this moment to reveal , but I can say that I had a blast shooting and had a great time working with the showrunners I really feel like we’ve created something that truly captures the spirit of Romero’s era movies. So I hope people like it.”
While the team has been working on a tight budget, it doesn’t really show in the trailer footage, with some of the zombies looking like The living Deadundead monsters, and buckets of blood to compete The Evil Death series. Being on SYFY, the series would never have an unlimited budget to work with, but as Kostanski himself pointed out, Romero didn’t have a huge budget to work on his previous Dead movies. Sometimes not being able to rely on the expensive special effects Amazon and Netflix throw into their original material means spending more time working on the story, the characters, and producing something better for them.
The original movie was the final installment of Romero’s zombie trilogy that began with Night of the Living Dead and continued Dawn of the Dead. While there have been a number of sequels, remakes, and reboots, this is the first time a series has been developed from the premise. While Romero’s film focused on a group of scientists and soldiers trying to learn more about their enemy, it looks like the series will focus on an ordinary group of youngsters just trying not to become zombie chow. Day of the Dead arrives on SYFY in October.
