While Black Widow has been a huge success for Marvel and currently has an audience rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, there was one major problem some had with the film; revealing Taskmaster’s identity. While many had expected Tony Masters from the comic books, Marvel took one of their usual twists and turns to make the character the gifted daughter of villain Dreykov.
Once the reveal was done, and based on the themes of the movie, it made perfect sense that they didn’t want the strongest character – with the ability to mimic and take on an opponent – to turn out to be anything but unexpected. Actress Olga Kurylenko, who played the character whose agenda and priorities towards the end of Black Widow, spoke to ComicBook.com recently, and had something to say about her MCU future.
“That’s what’s so exciting about her. There are so many directions she can go,” Kurylenko said. “She can go in so many different directions. And because there’s a battle in her between the good and the bad, and she’s got both and she’s both, of course she’s got the skills, but ultimately, as you say, that spell is hers and she’s out of control. So there’s a potential freedom and it could go that way. Who knows? The point is, it’s exciting. It could be anything. There’s a lot to explore. But the skills are indeed incredible and, yes, the character could, I mean, do a lot.”
Asked who she thought would be a great character for Taskmaster to work with or fight against, Kurylenko continued, “Everyone asks me that question. And it’s hard to pick one because they’re all different and they’re all awesome, and I always say since Taskmaster can mirror the others wouldn’t it be cool if he just face them all and maybe at the same time? That would be such a cool fight because it’s like being against yourself fight, right, if you fight Taskmaster because I will replicate all their moves. So everyone can be great.”
Black Widow writer Eric Pearson recently spoke with the site to discuss the character and decisions it took to create Taskmaster Dreykov’s daughter, and why there were many reasons for the reveal to mean something in the film. “Taskmaster was going to be involved and there were versions before I came, that was Tony Masters,” Pearson explained. “I kept thinking, I thought, ‘Couldn’t this guy be just a goon somehow?’ Because in the Red Room, Dreykov is the thing personally connected to Natasha in her past of gigantic, nefarious, that, as we’ve learned, the spy station, orbiting the globe in the atmosphere Why is there this man? Why should this man be an arm of them That’s what I kept trying to be… Believe me I’ve looked very, very far how do we credibly get this Tony Masters man a Red Room agent other things made sense , other parts of the puzzle added up.”
He concluded, “Oh, they stole from Ohio the cellular blueprint of the basal ganglia, the way to deconstruct free will. Okay. They have the ability to rebuild the mind. Oh, Dreykov’s daughter, Natasha used her.” as bait blew her Well what if she didn’t survive and this guy with a lot of brain science was that a good way to find these photographic reflexes It just made more sense I mean that’s the good thing is treating them you really at Marvel for your story. Does this work for your story? And everyone felt like it did, so we went with it. It felt like it made it more personal and I mean I hope fans like it I know that some won’t.’ Black Widow is currently in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.
