While Paul Rudd is currently known for his joy for Marvel fans as ant man, he reminded everyone this week of a different kind of joy he’s brought as a prankster over the past 20 years Conan O’Brien on his talk show with a now infamous scene from the 80s movie Mac and me.
The Ghostbusters: Afterlife star has appeared on Conan O’Brien’s show regularly over the years to promote various films, but his visits always seemed to result in him managing to show the same clip from the film rather than an “exclusive from his new movie or series. While Conan O’Brien welcomed some of his favorite guests to his show leading up to the finale, Rudd wasn’t about to let the show close without ruining the party for a final round of Mac and me.
During an interview with Bill Hader about: conan, in which they talked about a Saturday Night Live skit that didn’t get the best response – Rudd remembers it was called the worst skit ever thanks to rehearsals that didn’t get any laughs at all – Rudd walked onto the set and sat down to thunderous applause. He then discussed the SNL sketch in detail, seriously building up to the point that he said to Hader’s dismay they actually had a clip of the never-before-seen dress rehearsal of the sketch. With everyone handcuffed, Rudd cued the clip so everyone would be treated the same Mac and me clip he managed to pull out of the bag time and time again.
as the Mac and me clip ended, the camera cut back to Hader and O’Brien laughing hysterically, while Rudd sat between them sipping a cup, as casually as you can imagine. However, Rudd wasn’t quite done yet, and after he lured everyone into a false sense of security by revealing that over the years he had always intended to use a different clip than baby geniuses and since it was the last week of the show, he thought it was only okay to shoot that clip as well. Then came the video, and of course it was the same Mac and me clip again. You can watch the full clip below.
O’Brien noted that over the years Paul Rudd managed to catch him time and time again by his sincerity, which always led him to believe that this time he might see something new, and in fact, when he advertised ant man, Rudd gave the host something new – a clip from ant man with Mac and me woven into it, which is basically a movie I’d pay good money to see. You can see that video below.
While such a joke can thin over time, Rudd’s deadpan response every time makes the whole thing a joy to watch as O’Brien tries to explain, especially it seems to himself, how he got the actor could have it done again so many times. A compilation of many of the times Rudd has used the clip can be found below, and even if it means seeing the same clip a dozen times, the response is worth it every time.
