While some major movie releases hit theaters in the next month, there are still a number of movie studios that continue to shift their release schedules, and it looks like Sony Pictures has rescheduled a bit with confirmation today that Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, the fourth and final installment in the franchise, won’t hit theaters until October 1, 2021.
The film was originally slated to release next month, and while no reason has been given for the date change, there could be a number of factors contributing to this. With many major releases in July, including Marvel’s Black Widow, they may want to avoid that kind of competition. An October release would of course also bring the film closer to Halloween.
The sequel to 2018 Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania is the first film of the series that does not have the participation of Adam Sandler in the lead role of Drac. Instead, the voice is taken over by Brain Hull, a name that may be unfamiliar to many, but is probably best known for a 2013 YouTube video in which he performed the song “Let It Go” with the voices of a dozen various Disney characters. After securing a small vote in an episode of Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventureand Dracula in the short film Monster PetsTaking on Adam Sandler’s character is his first big-screen role, and certainly an opportunity that doesn’t come along too often.
The official recap of the latest outing for the family-friendly monsters in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania has also been released.
“Drac and the pack are back like you’ve never seen them before in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. Reunite with your favorite monsters for an all-new adventure in which Drac takes on his most terrifying task yet. When Van Helsing’s mysterious invention, the ‘Monsterfication Ray’, goes haywire, Drac and his monster friends are all transformed into humans, and Johnny becomes a monster! In their new mismatched bodies, Drac, stripped of his powers, and an exuberant Johnny, who loves life as a monster, must team up and race around the world to find a cure before it’s too late and before they drive each other crazy. With the help of Mavis and the hilariously human Drac Pack, it’s a challenge to find a way to switch themselves back before their transformations become permanent.”
The film also features voice actors from the likes of Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, Dave Spade and Molly Shannon. Much of the film’s production was completed remotely due to the pandemic, keeping it pretty much on schedule during the global health crisis. Despite this, the film’s release schedule was much more of a fluid affair, as it was originally listed to arrive on December 22, then rescheduled for August 6, and then rescheduled for July 23.
This latest move, while it’s a wise decision to pitch the film around Halloween, suggests Sony is still having a hard time deciding where to land their many films that have been left behind, trying to take advantage of audiences returning to the cinemas, but avoiding some of the big hitters scheduled for the coming months. Maybe the October 1 release is the one they’re sticking to.
