It was in November last year that Predator fans found out that a new sequel was secretly in the works, and it looks like it now Disney’s Predator Reboot will make its debut on Hulu. The news comes on the back of legal documents regarding the rights to the upcoming film stating that Hulu will distribute the film, which in turn appears to confirm that it will be a Hulu exclusive when it finally releases.
Originally under the working title “Skulls”, director Dan Trachtenberg’s plan, after his devious delivery of 10 Cloverfield Lane, was to keep the fact that he was busy with a Predator continued beyond public knowledge until the film was completed. Like his release from the clover field sequels, which arrived on the back of just one sketchy trailer, Trachtenberg revealed on his Twitter account last year that he was planning something similar before the gig was messed up.
In his November post, he said: “This was meant to be a surprise. We’ve been working on this for almost 4 years now. It’s very sad that what we had in store for us to discover this film will no longer happen. It’s a shame . But also…YAY!”
Trachtenberg had been working on the film from a Patrick Aison script, but had to confirm that “Skulls” was in fact his disguise for Predator 5 to avoid the kind of attention that an announcement of a new installment of the franchise as it progresses would obviously bring. With the expectation now the new Predator movie goes to Hulu, looks like the plan was probably to drop the movie the same way The Cloverfield Paradox arrived without warning on Netflix the same day the first trailer arrived.
Despite the surprise that was blown, fans of the Predator series were happy to know that their favorite pug-like aliens were returning for another outing, but may have been a little disappointed that it didn’t make it to the big screen. On the other hand, 2018’s The Predator, the last film to be released in the franchise, wasn’t exactly the successful reboot of the series that everyone involved had hoped for. In fact, as a series, everything since the original Predator in 1987, was anything but a success with critics, while making only moderate box office returns. You would wonder if there are still miles in it.
In February, a supposed synopsis was released for: Predator 5, which details the story of Kee, a Comanche woman who fights for her tribe — presumably against attacks from a Predator — despite their established gender norms forbidding her to be a tribal leader. The synopsis has never been officially confirmed, and there are some who would say it seems a bit of a tedious and unnecessary story about equality, while all people want to see it’s the kind of raw, suspenseful action movie that made the original such a hit. . But maybe that’s asking too much these days.
