One of the most anticipated of Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptations of their own animated classics is The Little Mermaid. Following the success of The Lion King, Aladdin, The Jungle Book Jungle and more, the 1989 film that introduced Ariel, Sebastian the Crab, Flounder the Fish, and the villainous Ursula the Sea Witch has always topped the list of other movies Disney could reinvent for new audiences. Though word about the filming has been thin, today we saw footage popping up online, which first saw Halle Bailey as the titular water princess.
Halle Bailey is best known for her role on ABC Family’s Grown-ish, and her casting in the film makes her the first black actress to play the character. Further announcements revealed that Daveed Digs would be voicing Sebastian the Crab, Jacob Tremblay the vocals of Bot and, and this hurts me a bit, Melissa McCarthy in the role of Ursula. Okay, it hurts me a lot, but it is what it is.
With the filming of the movie underway in Italy, it was only a matter of time before someone could get a cunning shot of the stars in action, and it happened today with two set shots of Bailey on an Italian beach with co-star. Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Ariel’s love Prince Eric, in what appears to be rehearsals for scenes we’d expect to actually shoot soon.
The location and images suggest that the scene they are filming takes place after Ariel rescues Eric from a shipwreck. The images show Bailey wearing a CG suit meaning much of her aquatic form will be made in post production. Just a few years ago, having a character created mostly out of CGI would terrify us, but with the recent technological leaps, the result should be stunning.
That sort of thing will have to wait until we get a trailer sometime in the future though. For now we have to make do with the somewhat blurry images we have today. Whether there will be any more tidbits like this in the coming weeks now that filming is clearly in full swing remains to be seen, but as with many Disney properties, fans will take whatever they can get.
The little Mermaid is directed by Rob Marshall, who is no stranger to musical characteristics or Disney. He directed the Oscar nominated film version of Chicago in 2002, In the woods in 2014 and most recently brought Disney’s favorite nanny back to the screen with Mary Poppins returns.
The script for the film is by Jane Goldman, whose range of genres encompasses the fantastical fantasy of several X-Men movies, horror with The woman in black, the comic book comedy Super awesome, and Daphne Du Maurier’s most recent adaptation Rebecca. Songwriter and Disney fan Alan Menken returns once again to add four new songs to his original soundtrack, including classics like Under The Sea and Kiss the Girl, as he did for the live-action Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast remakes. There is currently no release date for The little Mermaid, but we expect it to arrive sometime late in 2022.
