Amber Heard pays no attention to the critics who consistently call for her to be fired from Aquaman 2, as the actress fired back by expressing how excited she is to start filming. This week, director James Wan revealed that the upcoming superhero sequel will be officially named Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The sequel will bring back Jason Momoa as the titular Justice League member with Heard co-starring as Mera, who reprises her role from the original film.
The Aquaman 2 news revived the fan campaign to have Amber Heard fired from the sequel. Her name quickly became popular on Twitter as tens of thousands of people condemned Heard’s involvement. It also led to more names being added to the growing petition on Change.org for Mera’s role recast, which has now garnered more than 1.84 million signatures. The resistance is certainly not to be ignored, but it seems to have had no effect on the Aquaman 2 production.
Amid renewed controversy over her casting, Heard posted a flashback photo to Instagram of her loved one Jason Momoa. While Heard isn’t directly addressing her critics, Heard makes it clear that she’s still part of the project, suggesting she’s “ready” to start filming with Momoa again for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. You can view the message below.
“Ready to get back to this,” Heard says in the caption about the Aquarius sequel.
The resistance against Amber heard relates to her tumultuous relationship with Johnny Depp and their ongoing legal battle. Because of the publicity, Depp was called by Warner Bros. asked for his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3even though the shooting had already started. Depp supporters claim the same studio is firing Depp over the allegations while Heard is being kept on board for Aquaman 2 is a double standard, as many believe it was actually Heard who insulted Depp based on evidence released by the actor’s legal team.
Heard has also previously rejected the request to resign. In November, she confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that she would be reprising her role as Mera in Aquaman 2despite all rumors to the contrary. She also suggested that the petition was part of a “paid campaign” that will ultimately make no difference to her casting.
“Paid rumors and paid social media campaigns don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality,” Heard said. “Only the fans made it real Aquarius and Aquaman 2 to happen. I’m excited to get started next year.”
For its part, Momoa has not responded to the Aquaman 2 news on his social media yet. He did share the new teaser for season 2 of See, the sci-fi series on Apple TV+ featuring the Aquarius star alongside Alfred Woodard. Dave Bautista will play Momoa’s character’s brother in the second season, which premieres on August 27, 2021.
Starring Heard and Momoa, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will also premiere in theaters on December 16, 2022. New images from both were also featured in Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max in March. Meanwhile, Heard can also be seen in the new drama trench, which premiered in theaters earlier this month.
