The clock is ticking for the God of Mischief in the latest teaser trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series, Loki. The images come as the streaming service counts down the moments to Marvel Studios’ Loki, with the original series beginning to stream on June 9 with new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
Loki starts right after the wily Asgardian steals the coveted Tesseract during the 2019 events Avengers: Endgame. This alternate version of Loki, again played by Tom Hiddleston, is quickly taken to the mysterious Time Variance Authority, otherwise known as the TVA, a bureaucratic organization that exists beyond time and space and guards the timeline. They give Loki a simple choice: face removed from existence for being a “time variant”, or help restore the timeline and stop a larger threat. Of course, since this is Loki, he soon finds himself trapped in his own crime thriller, traveling through time and changing human history.
The series also introduces audiences to Owen Wilson as Time Variance Authority agent Mobius M. Mobius, as well as Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, a TVA judge, and Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15 alongside Hiddleston. In fact, it is the battle between Loki and the TVA that will form the central conflict of the series; “The TVA. An organization that rules the order of time. Pretty big institution. Big responsibility to make sure time unfolds along predetermined lines,” Hiddleston said previously of the show. “So you have an attitude that represents order, and a character that represents chaos. That’s where the drama starts.”
While the general idea for the upcoming series is now known, Loki will likely bring a lot of surprises during the first season, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently revealing that the Asgardian could very well take on several other versions of itself. “He’s been around for thousands of years. He’s had all kinds of adventures,” Feige said of the popular protagonist of the series. “Want to fill in the blanks and see a lot more of Loki’s story [was] the initial desire [for the series]. Part of the fun of the multiverse and playing with time is seeing different versions of characters. And other versions of the titular character in particular.”
Of course, audiences have seen several alternate versions of their Marvel favorites, with Avengers: Endgame introduced the idea courtesy of Nebula, Gamora, and Captain America, with the latter even being forced to fight with himself. Since this is the Loki, it’s likely that each version will see itself as the top version, or big cheese, which should lead to all sorts of hilarity and double-crossing.
Lokis The premiere date was recently brought forward and the show will now air on Wednesdays instead of Fridays starting June 9, 2021 on Disney+. The first season will consist of six episodes and the show will be part of Phase Four of the MCU. A second season of Loki is already in development, with Marvel Studios previously suggesting many more adventures could be coming.
