The cast of Netflix’s superhero series Jupiter’s Legacy has been released from their contractual obligations, effectively ending the show after just one season. Instead, streaming giant and writer Mark Millar will work on developing other projects set within the The Legacy of Jupiter universe, starting with super villains.
“I am really proud of what the team has achieved with The Legacy of Jupiter and the amazing work everyone has done in that origin season,” Mark Millar said in a statement. “I’ve been asked a lot about what we’re up to with this world now and the answer is to see what the super villains are up to. I’ve always loved crime stories from Scorsese to Tarantino and super villains are always the funniest part of any superhero story.”
“To do something that focuses solely on the villains they’re fighting just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it’s like to be a villain in a world teeming with the good guys who want to put you in jail,” he continued. “The Legacy of Jupiter is a huge and rich space with a lot of characters to mine and so I’m happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the ‘super villains‘ comic I made with Leinil Francis Yu a few years ago. Given where we’re headed, we’ve made the tough decision to let our incredible cast out of their show involvement as we continue to carefully develop all the realms of the “Jupiter’s Legacy” saga. We’re sure we’ll come back to it later and would like to thank you for your continued support and the cast and crew who made this look so amazing.”
Written by Mark Millar with artwork by Leinil Francis Yu, super villains follows a group of villains who plan a monumental heist. The live-action show, which is currently in its early stages, is being developed alongside an anime-style series based on the same material, with Netflix planning to spawn an anthology franchise of The Legacy of Jupiter, rather than continuing the central story that began with the first season last month.
While Millar does say he is confident The Legacy of Jupiter will return at some point, don’t hold your breath. The first season, developed by DaredevilSteven S. DeKnight, received a largely mixed response from critics, which would certainly have disappointed the streaming service, which had no doubt hoped to match Amazon’s solid reviews. the boys and more recently the animated series, Invincible.
Despite the apparent end The Legacy of Jupiter before it really had a chance to take off, Netflix still has several projects in development for their Millarworld franchise, including American Jesus, following a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers that he is the returned Jesus Christ, huck, who follows a simple man in a small town who uses his special skills to do a good deed every day, and Sharkey the bounty hunterSet in a sci-fi universe, it follows Sharkey, a worker bounty hunter, who tracks criminals across the galaxy in his converted rocket-powered ice cream truck.
So, are you disappointed to see? The Legacy of Jupiter ended so quickly? For those who still want to dive into the short live series, which stars Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade and Matt Lanter, the first season is available to stream on Netflix.
