Finally, Friends: the reunion premiered on HBO Max this week, and a standout moment for many fans was Lady Gaga’s “Smelly Cat” cover. Featuring the original six protagonists reminiscent of the series, the special brought back Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. A variety of special guests were also featured in the special, including superfan Lady Gaga.
In the segment, Lisa Kudrow is playing Phoebe’s classic song when it suddenly comes in, but Lady Gaga. The “Born This Way” singer, dressed as Phoebe on the original sitcom, offers to join in and give “Smelly Cat” a spin. After Gaga sings a verse, the two sing the song together. A gospel chorus even joins the song at the end of the segment. The scene has since been shared on social media, where it has quickly garnered millions of views from fans.
“I am sorry but Lady Gaga can absolutely clap Smelly Cat, ” Liv Marks posted on Twitter, sharing a video clip of the duet.
“Lady gaga singing stinky cat with Lisa Kudrow while dressing up as phoebe is something I didn’t know I needed,” read another tweet.
“Gaga and Phoebe play Smelly Cat together !!!! So sweet and so cute,” says another fan. “2 women who were never afraid to be anything other than themselves and are always celebrated for that.”
A tweet reads: “Dear @ladygaga & @LisaKudrow: I seriously wonder why the #SmellyCat gospel remix is not available to stream / download / buy / own / cherish forever. Friends please fix this immediately. “
“lady gaga and lisa kudrow performing a stinky cat together is something straight out of my fever dreams,” writes another viewer.
And another fan posted, “I have to say, although I felt the ‘guests’ were selected for the Friends Reunion to be really random (except for the ones who appeared on the show, of course); Gaga singing #SmellyCat with Lisa made me grin from ear to ear. “
Along with Lady Gaga, some of the other famous guests who will appear on the special are Cara Delevingne, Cindy Crawford, Kit Harington, Thomas Lennon, Reese Witherspoon, David Beckham, Tom Selleck and Mindy Kaling. The special features are reproductions of the series’ original sets, such as the Central Perk apartment and coffee shop, along with table readings and cast interviews. Behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the series will also be shown, and the cast will reveal stories about the production that have never been told before.
Friends co-creator David Crane says there is no interest in a reboot or revival of the series, but it made sense to do the reunion show as a one-off special.
“The idea of doing a reboot or something where you see the characters again was off the table,” Crane recently told THR. “We ended the series the way we wanted to end it, and the idea of revisiting the characters was never interesting. But even a reunion I was worried. [director] Ben Winston presented his views on it and I found myself getting very excited. I left that meeting and said, “Oh, this can be really cool.” ”
