Star Wars fans are known for getting What If? scenarios based on the hit franchise, and the latest epic fan-made video marks the arrival of something we’ve never seen before – Obi-Wan Kenobi fight against Obi-Wan Kenobi in a complete rework of the Obi-Wan vs Anakin Skywalker battle seen in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith.
With the Disney + series starring Obi-Wan in the not-too-distant future, one of the most extensively crafted fan-edited videos of recent times has been posted to YouTube, featuring the Jedi as played by Ewan McGregor in a fight with nobody different from himself. . The images used to create the video are mainly from the last moments of Star Wars: Episode III, the last of the much-maligned prequel films in which McGregor portrayed a younger version of the character played by Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars.
In 2019, it was confirmed that McGregor had signed on the dotted line to reprise his role in a series that would see a host of faces from the prequels and more return to the franchise, including Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. Bringing Christensen back while Vader sets up a rematch for the former friends, who were last seen together in the fateful duel that led to Anakin Skywalker becoming the Sith Lord. While very little detail is available on the plot of the series, a promised rematch between the pair has already been confirmed and it will definitely become the stuff of the Star Wars legend.
McGregor recently commented on the upcoming series, stating that he was able to do “a very special scene” where he performed in front of someone he’d never worked with before, but described as “someone special.” Fans of a small Marvel TV series called WandaVision will feel this is something they’ve heard before as it’s more or less word for word literal from the quote Paul Bettany gave leading up to the finale of that series.
However, many fans found it difficult when it turned out that he was actually referring to scenes where his character Vision fought with another version of his own character, White Vision. While some may believe that this quote led YouTuber Janobot to post their Kenobi Vs Kenobi epic online, it’s actually nothing more than a well-timed coincidence. Using clips from McGregor’s Obi-Wan, and at some points just McGregor out of character, the battle for Mustafar will never be viewed the same way again.
While some may wonder if this double duel could really make it to the Obi-Wan series, even with the similarities between McGregor’s and Bettany’s comments about his double vision, it is unlikely to be the case this time around. For starters, McGregor has played alongside himself in The Island before.
My personal belief is that the magic of technology will be used to bring McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Alec Guinness’ version of the Jedi together in one scene, it would certainly be something special and not just another Star Wars cameo appearance. With many months to go before the new series airs on Disney + in 2022, there’s plenty of time for fans to make more of their own Obi-Wan videos to join the brilliant endeavors already out there.
