Fans, friends and relatives of Flyin ‘ Brian Pillman pay tribute to the late pro wrestler on what would have been his 59th birthday. Known for his antics as ‘The Loose Cannon’ in WCW, ECW and WWE, Pillman died at the age of 35 in 1997. His tragic story was recently chronicled with the two-part premiere of Season 3 of Dark side of the ring, Vice TV’s critically acclaimed documentary series highlighting the darkest stories of pro wrestling.
Pillman may have disappeared, but many are honoring him on social media. A particularly moving tribute comes from Pillman’s son, AEW star Brian Pillman Jr., who has since followed in his father’s footsteps as a professional wrestler. Heading for an indie show hosted by New England All-Star Wrestling, Brian posted an image of himself wearing the same unique shirt his father often wore on WWE television.
In the caption, Jr writes: “Happy Birthday Dad! I’m going to wear your iconic shirt and wrestle at an indie show in Boston !!!”
Posting an image of Brian Sr. in a bad leather jacket, the Dark side of the ring Twitter account added: “In memory of Brian Pillman today on what would have been his 59th birthday.”
Many fans also pay tribute to The Loose Cannon. The Caluiflower Alley Club posted a tweet that reads: “The legendary ‘Flying’ Brian ‘Loose Cannon’ Pillman is said to have turned 59 today. Although Brian is gone, his legacy continues through the rise of his son AEW star Brian Pillman Jr. And for that we greet you, your father would be proud. ”
“Happy birthday to the late Brian Pillman,” another fan posted. “A man I called a friend in the 90’s for years. Me and my dad backstage at a WCW show in Dayton, Ohio. He would be so happy to see his son [Brian Pillman Jr.] carries on his legacy immensely. REST IN PEACE. Brian. “
Another tweet reads, “Happy birthday to the late great Brian Pillman. He was a versatile wrestler ahead of his time. His matches with Liger were the best and the loose canon character was top class. Who knows what feuds we would have” as he had been there longer. There will never be another. ‘
“Like every day, today is a really great day to watch Brian Pillman,” says someone else. “Congratulations on the loose cannon.”
And another fan writes: “Thinking of [Brian Pillman Jr.] and the entire Pillman family on what would have been Brian Pillman’s birthday. He will be missed and remembered forever. “
From his tag team with Steve Austin as part of the Hollywood Blonds in WCW to partnering with Bret Hart and the rest of the Hart Foundation in WWE, Pillman made an incredible impression on struggling fans around the world. Due to his larger-than-life personality and his dedication to his character and wrestling achievements, the pro wrestling legend is still remembered and loved all these years later. Rest in peace, Brian Pillman, and happy birthday to you in Heaven.
