Black Adam surely won’t be the first superhero to play Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on the big screen. Although Johnson is currently shooting Black Adam With a planned 2022 release for the film, it has been reported that The Rock has signed up to feature Superman’s pet, Krypto the Super-Dog, in the animated DC’s League of Super-Pets. The film will be released in theaters in May 2022, about two months earlier Black Adam premieres.
Besides lending his voice to Clark Kent’s best friend, Dwayne Johnson will co-produce the film with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions. John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and Nicholas Stoller are executive producers. The script was written by Jared Stern, who also co-directs with Sam Levine. Per Warner Bros. and Warner Animation Group will form an all-star voice cast for the rest of the animated super-pets and animal villains. Placing The Rock in a leading role is of course a good start.
Krypto the Super-Dog, created by Otto Binder and Curt Swan, made its first appearance Adventure comics # 210 for DC Comics in 1955. Resembling a Labrador Retriever, the white-haired dog carries similar super powers to adult Kryptonians with exceptionally strong senses of hearing and smell. He was intended to be a one-off character, although his popularity with readers kept him appearing in comic books.
In 2005, Cartoon Network gave the super-powered animal its own show by launching the animated series Krypto the super dog. In terms of live action, Krypto made its debut in the DC Universe series Titans with trained dog actors sharing the role. Depicted as a Golden Retriever, this version of Krypto was a test subject who joins the Titans after being rescued from a kryptonite-powered cage at Cadmus Laboratories. The Superman prequel series Smallville also an episode where Clark Kent (Tom Welling) similarly rescues a Luther Corp dog test, but while considering calling him Krypto, he ends up calling it Shelby.
Krypto has also made another special appearance on the big screen in its animated form. In 2018, the dog appeared in Teen Titans Go! To the movies as one of the many superhero characters who get their own movie. He has since appeared in the animated series DC Super Hero Girls also with Dee Bradley Baker providing the dog’s voice.
