Tim Burton has found his Wednesday Addams in Jenna Ortega (Jane the Virgin). As previously reported, the Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands director has been tapped by Netflix to develop a reboot of The Addams family. Titled Wednesday the new series specifically follows an older Wednesday as a student at Nevermore Academy, though the other crazy members of the Addams family will no doubt show up.
Wednesday is described as a coming-of-age comedy and a ‘probing, supernaturally steeped mystery’ that chronicles Wednesday’s days in college. As per Deadline, that’s where the popular Addams Family member ‘tries to master her emerging psychic abilities, thwart a monstrous massacre that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery her parents set in 25 years ago. confused – all while she’s through her new and deeply confused relationships.
Prior to her casting, Jenna Ortega was one of the names rumored to be eligible for the role. Along with her role as Young Jane on Jane the VirginOrtega is also known for her roles as Harley Diaz on the Disney Channel series Stuck in the middle and Ellie Alves in the Netflix thriller series YOU. Also appears in Insidious: Chapter 2 and along with the upcoming slasher sequel Shout 5, the 18-year-old actress is also quickly becoming a staple of the horror genre.
Ortega is the first name to be officially announced as part of the cast, so it remains to be seen who will play the other Addams family members. There has been a lot of speculation about the role of Gomez Addams in particular, with Johnny Depp often emerging as a strong possibility given his relationship with Tim Burton. Some fans had also wanted to see his daughter Lily-Rose Depp on Wednesday when Depp was cast as Gomez. Rami Malek and Oscar Isaac are Family two other popular contenders with fans.
Wednesday Addams was famously played by Christina Ricci in the original live action Addams Family movies in the 1990s. There are unconfirmed rumors that Ricci would be brought in Wednesday to play Morticia Addams, which would be an interesting full-circle moment for the actress. Had Depp been cast as Gomez, Ricci’s casting would serve as another big reunion, as Depp and Ricci previously starred together in Burton’s movie. Sleepy Hollow.
The Addams will also continue with its series of animated films. After the first animated film was released at the box office with great success in 2019, the family returns this year in a sequel with The Addams Family 2 will bow on October 1, 2021. The films feature the voice of Oscar Isaac, one of the actors that people also want to see play Gomez in a live-action project.
MGM Television produces Wednesday with Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar serve as writers and showrunners. Tim Burton is directing, and the project marks his very first stint directing a TV series. Burton’s executive produces with Gough, Millar, Kayla Alpert, Steve Shark and several producers who are on the Addams Family IP: Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi, Jonathan Glickman, and Gail Berman.
