Cinemas are making a comeback. Disney has confirmed that some of their late summer movies will stay in theaters for at least 45 days before Disney + adopts them for streaming. One of the first is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Five Rings and from Marvel Studios Free guy, both of which will have a strict cinema premiere for at least 45 days. However, the number of days is flexible and Disney may decide to keep them in theaters for longer if they get it right. Unlike Disney’s upcoming movies Cruella (the 28th of May), Black Widow(July 9), and Jungle Cruise (July 30) will all have theater / Disney + hybrid releases, meaning they will also be available for purchase on Disney + on release day for $ 29.99. This news comes from deadline.com.
Free guy (August 13) and Shang-Chi(September 3) are the only Disney movies currently announced for the 45-day theatrical release plan. If Disney + continues to prove itself as a viable movie premiere ship, it is possible that all future Disney films will follow this plan. On the other hand, if movie theaters return to full blast, the release plan may only be temporary. We will keep you informed if anything changes.
Other film studios with similar plans for 2021 include Warner Bros. and Paramount. Warner Bros. famously and controversially decided to release their full 2021 slate in cinemas and on HBO Max on the same day of release. Godzilla to Kong and Mortal Kombat were the first to follow this plan, and they both did pretty well at the box office, in addition to pulling big numbers on the streaming service.
The company still plans to continue its current release plans. Paramount is pursuing a similar plan to Disney by releasing their movies in theaters for exactly 45 days before moving straight to their new streaming service Paramount +. A quiet place II (May 21) will be their first major movie to test the release plan. It is interesting to see how different each major movie studio is with their plans. So far there are no wrong answers.
Free guy plays Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. The film follows a video game NPC (played by Ryan Reynolds) as he becomes self-aware and learns that he lives in a video game world. Ryan Reynolds has humorously discussed that it might be his favorite movie he’s ever made, which is a pretty bold claim by the Deadpool star. It was originally set to premiere in theaters in July, but was pushed back significantly due to COVID-19. Free guy now officially appears in theaters only on August 13.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Five Rings Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, Awkwafina as Katy, Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist, Fala Chen as Jiang Li, Ronny Chieng as Jon Jon and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung as Wenwu (presumably the Mandarin). Shang-Chi will historically mark the first major superhero film directed by an all-Asian cast. Originally set to release in February 2021, Marvel Studios shifted their release schedules around after the pandemic. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Five Rings will be officially released on September 3, only in theaters.
