The Mandalorian is one of the few Star Wars projects that have united fans across the franchise. By contrast, the sequels struggled greatly on that front, despite introducing many beloved characters into the universe. Rey was one of those characters, and it is now rumored that Rey and The Mandalorian are destined to collide. Inverse.com reports that Daisy Ridley is signing up to reprise her role as Rey on a future project, and the website is confident it will be for The Mandalorian. Let’s get into that rumor.
The biggest hurdle to Rey’s story remains in The Mandalorian is the timeline. While both the Disney + series and the Sequels take place after the original trilogy, Rey’s story takes place at least two decades after Din Djarin’s and Baby Yoda’s. The only way Daisy Ridley appears on the show is like The Mandalorian makes a huge time jump between seasons. For most shows, this would be impossible, but season 2 on The Mandalorian felt a lot like an end. Baby Yoda (excuse me, Grogu) was sent to train with Luke Skywalker, and Din Djarin was left with the Dark Saber. Narratively speaking, if the show moved forward two decades, it wouldn’t leave many storylines unresolved.
Now the big question is why Rey would return The Mandalorian as opposed to her own solo adventure. A great connection could be Baby Yoda. Ben Solo (who would later become Kylo Ren) is known to destroy the Jedi Academy led by Luke Skywalker. This leads us to believe that Baby Yoda was present at the Academy when this took place, although he probably escaped somehow. A storyline that Rey follows as she discovers Baby Yoda and starts a new Jedi Academy could make a lot of sense, and the Mandalorian series might be the best place to do it. Din Djarin could return without needing an old man’s makeup (he usually wears a helmet) and could potentially team up with Rey. The possibilities are there.
Ultimately, I think Daisy will be Ridley’s return to her own Rey-centric project. While I think Rey and Baby Yoda are destined to meet somewhere along the line, Star Wars fans are invested in the adventures of Din Djarin and his friends. Having a twenty-year time jump after just two seasons would be extremely shocking, but not unheard of. I predict that when Rey shows up The Mandalorian, it will be in a season later.
The Mandalorian Season 3 has begun, but it will be a while before it premieres. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have confirmed that The Book of Boba Fett movies before season 3, meaning it won’t arrive until mid to late 2022. The other obstacle is Pedro Pascal’s commitment to the upcoming HBO Max adaptation of The last of us, which has movie priority The Mandalorian. Either way, it will be a long time before Star Wars fans learn if the Rey rumor is coming to fruition.
