Almost a decade in the making, Henry Mortensen’s Skating Polly: Ugly Pop documentary is finally finished and ready for its online premiere. The film will be screened in its entirety for the first time at the 2021 deadCenter Film Festival. Written and directed by Henry Mortensen, the film delves deep into ugly pop band Skating Polly and its versatile members Peyton Bighorse, Kelli Mayo, and Kurtis Mayo, three Oklahoma siblings who have brought genre-defeating music to the masses for more. than ten years.
“Peyton Bighorse and Kelli Mayo are stepsisters from Oklahoma who formed their band Skating Polly when they were 14 and 9 years old respectively. They call their music style “Ugly Pop”: catchy melodies, but with real flecks that are still visible. This film is a documentary about the early years of Skating Polly. Peyton and Kelli taste success for the first time and try to stay true to themselves and their love for music. We see the sisters growing as people and musicians and how they became the band they are today. Their seriousness is refreshing and inspiring everywhere. “
Henry Mortensen has followed Peyton Bighorse and Kelli Mayo along the way and through several recording sessions to dig deep into the process behind the music. The story follows the step-siblings through their earliest years and albums, and crescendos with the making of their 2018 hit album The Make It All Show, which ended just as brother Curtis Mayo joined the band to take on drumming duties ( for the most part), although all three musicians are masters of their craft and known for knocking out instruments during their live shows.
Skating Polly are currently preparing to record a new album, and have been in the studio for the past few months preparing never-before-heard music. Kelli Mayo is recovering from surgery that left her unable to sing for the past year and a half, but she’s almost ready to make her triumphant comeback, and the band has international tour dates set for 2022. (fingers crossed).
Skating Polly: Ugly Pop will have its online dC virtual platform premiere on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. CDT. Along with the trio that are Kelli, Peyton and Curtis, the band’s mentor, Exene Cervenka, of iconic punk band X, legendary musician Kate Nash and pioneering artist Lori Anne Barbero, most notorious for her lofty punk band Babes, also appears. in Toyland. The film also promises to hold some surprises.
Henry Mortensen is an actor turned filmmaker who has appeared in films such as Blue tiger and Crimson Tide back in the 90’s as a young boy. Most recently, he appeared as Sergeant Saunders in the directorial debut of Viggo Mortensen Fall. Kelli Mayo had this to say Skating Polly: Ugly Pop when we spoke to her earlier this year.
‘I am ready. I don’t remember how many years it is now [Henry Mortensen has] even follow us for it. But it was quite some time. And he was there for some great things. Like us recording The Big Fit and us on the Babes in Toyland tour, and us at Riot Fest. I’ve watched it. I like it very much. I think he has some really, really great, like, just happy, beautiful moments there. Kate Nash is in it. Many of my heroes, many of my friends. Just all these little memories. It’s very special. There are many special things in it. It’s pretty cute. And it is a sweet, happy movie. It is funny. I’m pretty young through it. And I am often a huge bastard. Like a big ham. There are just a lot of funny, candid moments between me and Peyton, and then Kurtis at the end. “
