Noah Centineo is out at Sony Masters of the Universe restart. The planned live action movie, years in the works, took a big step forward in 2019 when Centineo was reportedly cast to play the coveted role of He-Man. It has also been reported that Aaron and Adam Nee (Band of Robbers) was supposed to write and direct the feature, but updates have stalled since then.
Now, according to a new report from Collider, Noah Centineo has chosen to walk away from the project. The young actor was reportedly close to finishing his detail on playing He-Man, but a Centineo rep said on Thursday that he has moved on since then. It is not clear whether this was due to scheduling issues or a problem with the negotiations, but it has been reported that Centineo is no longer the Prince Adam of the film.
“He’s no longer attached to that project,” Centineo’s rep claimed, but stopped giving a reason.
Who knows what happened behind the scenes between 2019 and now, but Centineo seemed quite excited back then when he talked about his casting as He-Man. In an interview on The Tonight Show at the time, the actor said he was “very excited” about the role and then called it “quite an opportunity.” About the character’s unique look, Centineo also joked that he “had an affinity for being in my underwear,” also referring to Calvin Klein’s ads featuring the actor in boxer shorts.
The Masters of the Universe film is based on the original Mattel toy line and subsequent 1987 film adaptation. Directed by Gary Goddard, the classic film featured Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Courteney Cox, Barry Livingston, Meg Foster and James Tolkan also played. Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t doing very well at the box office at the time, and critics weren’t very nice to it Masters of the Universe one of both. Still, in the years since its original release, the film has become a cult classic.
Masters of the Universe just wasn’t in the cards for Centineo, but the 24-year-old is dealing with other blockbuster roles. He is currently working on the upcoming superhero movie Black Adam for Warner Bros., which is now in production in Atlanta. The film stars Centineo Atom Smasher, a superhero who is part of the Justice Society of America alongside Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan). Black Adam will be released on July 29, 2022.
Meanwhile, Centineo will also star in a GameStop movie for Mark Boal’s Netflix and executive producer Doug Liman’s self-titled CIA spy thriller series. As regards Masters of the Universe, the film has still not set a new official release date at Sony. It was previously scheduled to come out on March 5 before delays pushed back the project, and this comes after years of the project rolling around in development hell with several filmmakers attached to it. This news comes from Collider.
