Chewbacca was almost forced to put on pants in A New Hope. Mark Hamill revealed the news in a recent tweet, which also featured some concept art from the world’s favorite Wookiee with a little dress on. We learned quite a bit about it Star Wars and Chewie over the years, thanks to some hardcore fans and Hamill’s social media accounts, but wearing pants isn’t a fact that has gotten a lot of attention, at least in recent years.
Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt tweeted some of Ralph McQuarrie’s original Chewbacca designs for A new hope earlier this week, which Mark Hamill retweeted. “FUN FACT: Very early on during #SW studio execs’ recording, they expressed deep concern that Chewie was not wearing pants and suggested that he wear a pair of lederhosen,” Hamill said in his tweet. “That they would focus on this in the midst of all the grotesque elements in the script made us laugh (and a little worried).” The Luke Skywalker actor then added the hashtag “TrueStory”. The studio was apparently not ready for a naked Chewie.
The Star Wars universe would have been pretty weird if Chewbacca had pants on, although fans probably never would have said anything about it if it were all we ever knew. Looking back at Ralph McQuarrie’s original designs, it’s clear that Chewie went through a lot of changes before getting to his final design. Originally, he looked more like a classic alien with some fur before becoming the loving ball of fuzz he is today. Regardless, it seems like ditching the pants was a wise decision for Chewie’s overall look, even if the studio thought he looked insultingly naked.
The Star Wars franchise isn’t really centered on Chewbacca, so it probably wouldn’t have really done what he wore, or even what he looked like. That said, the character is a fan favorite, and has been ever since A new hope Opened in theaters over 40 years ago. See the young version of Chewie in Solo was a franchise highlight, as was seeing its dramatic turnaround The Force Awakens.
Chewbacca’s naked look with a bandolier is iconic and he can even walk through Disneyland and Disney World like that, so after all this time there’s really no problem with the nudity. Chewbacca remains one of the brightest stars in the galaxy, all thanks to the creative minds of Ralph McQuarrie and George Lucas. Hopefully we’ll see more of it in the near future, maybe on Disney + with its own series. While that hasn’t been officially confirmed by Lucasfilm, Star Wars fans would probably love to see it happen, with or without pants. You can see the big Star Wars reveal above, thanks to Mark Hamill’s official Twitter account.
