Indiana Jones 5 gathers quite a bit of cast, despite the plot details being kept hidden for now. The currently untitled fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise, which began in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, will be released in July 2022. It is the first installment in the action adventure series in over fourteen years since the release of Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull (2008), which received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.
That actor has been announced Thomas Kretschmann, the German-born actor who owned the villainous Baron von Strucker from Loki’s staff in Marvel’s 2015 MCU term Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain Wilm Hosenfeld in Roman Polanski’s The pianist (2002), is released in the coming Indiana Jones movie. Whether Kretschmann will play a hero or a villain has yet to be determined, as the role has not currently been announced. Kretschmann has also starred in such films as Peter Jackson’s King Kong (2005), Guillermo del Toro’s Knife II (2002), and even lent his voice to Pixar’s Cars 2 (2011).
Indiana Jones 5 is the first film in the series to not have director Steven Spielberg at the helm, who stepped down in February 2020 after declaring that he wanted to pass the character of Indy on to a new generation. Then James Mangold (Logan, Ford vs Ferrari) was attached to writing and directing, with Spielberg in the producer’s chair. Mangold is reportedly co-writing the film with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, who previously worked with Mangold on the award-nominated script. Ford against Ferrari.
More recently, Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Flea bag) were cast for the lead role in Mangold’s Indiana Jones film alongside Harrison Ford, who reprises the role of the wielding archaeologist / adventurer for the fifth time in 40 years. Waller-Bridge and Mikkelsen have made a name for themselves with the first Emmy-winning series of 2019 Flea bag, and his film with a 2021 Academy Award nomination Another round. However, their roles in the upcoming Indy movie also remain unknown.
The fifth installment in the Lucasfilm franchise certainly has a lot of buzz as it is the longest-returning character Harrison Ford has portrayed in his entire career (Han Solo at three years and Rick Deckard at six), and will most likely be the last time that we see Ford on the famous fedora. However, with a successful director like James Mangold at the helm, and a cast consisting of Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the recent addition of Thomas Kretschmann, the latest (and possibly final) installment in the Indiana Jonessaga is sure to be a hit with ticket booths around the world.
It is too early to say what the addition of Kretschmann’s addition to the cast will mean for the plot of the fifth Indiana Jones and the legacy Spielberg built in 1981, but we can only assume more details will come closer to the July 2022 release date.
