Godzilla to Kong has continued to assert its dominance at the box office through its third weekend of release in the U.S. The film added an additional $ 7.7 million this weekend, making it the number one film for the third straight week. In addition, it is now dangerously close to the $ 400 million mark worldwide. And, perhaps most amazing given the circumstances, the latest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise has already surpassed that of 2019 Godzilla: King of the Monsters
At the moment of writing, Godzilla vs Kong has earned $ 390.2 million worldwide. Meanwhile 2019’s King of the monstersdirected by Michael Dougherty, made $ 383.2 million during its entire theatrical run. That’s impressive for several reasons. First and foremost, King of the monsters in theaters in May 2019, long before the pandemic crushed cinemas around the world. It had a full, uninhibited run and couldn’t cross the $ 400 million mark. It served as the highly anticipated sequel to 2014’s Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards. The sequel also introduced other classic Toho beasts, such as Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah.
Meanwhile, Godzilla to Kong had worked a lot against it on paper. It was one of the first blockbusters to hit theaters as health and safety concerns began to subside. That said, those concerns are far from over and all theaters are still closed. In addition, many of those who are open have a reduced capacity. Not to mention perhaps the biggest hurdle, which is the fact that the movie is available to stream on HBO Max in the US at no additional cost to subscribers. Be that as it may, director Adam Wingard’s kaiju brawl has turned out to be something people want to see on the big screen.
Another hugely important factor to consider here is critical reception. Godzilla: King of the Monsters had a lot of hype prior to its release. But critics weren’t overly friendly, as the film currently has a 42 percent critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the viewership score, 83 percent, is much better. However, Godzilla to Kong had better word of mouth everywhere. The critical approval rating is 75 percent, while the ratings are a whopping 91 percent. There is no doubt that this contributed to the successful performance of the film.
To date Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Monster Fresh franchise has earned $ 1.86 billion worldwide from four movies. Depending on how much gas Godzilla to Kong in the tank, the franchise could get near $ 2 billion here in the coming months. This leads to the always important question of what the future holds. For the time being, there is no word yet about a possible sequel. While some of the creative team has been teasing behind-the-scenes ideas to bring the monsters back for future episodes, nothing has been announced yet. But the studio would undoubtedly like to keep it going. These numbers come from Box Office Mojo.
