Many DC fans thought it strange that Zack Snyder was one of the most talked about moments of the Justice League HBO Max trailer after finished movie release. The filmmaker had Jared Leto’s Joker utter the iconic meme quote ‘We Live in a Society …’ in a speech focused on Ben Affleck’s The Batman. The footage was in the first official trailer before Zack Snyder’s Justice LeagueBut it didn’t make it to the finished Snyder Cut. Zack Snyder has now fully restored that moment with an expanded deleted scene from Justice League with the epic showdown of Batman and Joker.
Zack Snyder shared the clip ‘We Live in a Society’ on Twitter for all to see. This is an alternate view of what was eventually used in it Justice League when it premiered on HBO Max a few weeks ago. These resurfaced images give the scene in question more context and give us another kiss from Jared Leto’s Joker, who may never show up in the DCEU again after this.
Batman’s dialogue matches what we see in the movie, as he responds to Joker’s Robin taunts and reveals that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn died in his arms. He growls, “You know it’s funny. You talk about people who died in my arms. Because when I was holding Harley Quinn, and she was bleeding and dying, she begged me, with her dying breath, that when I killed you, and no mistake, I’ll kill you f ** k * ng, that I’ll do it slow. I’m going to keep that promise. “
Batman draws the Joker’s card from his hand. “Maybe this will come in handy?” Joker does not enter Batman’s emotional monologue. And here we finally hear Jared Leto utter those iconic words.
‘Honor? Really Bruce? Honor? We live in a society … where honor is a distant memory. By the way … Who do you think screamed the loudest? The girl? Or the boy? ‘
Joker smiles Bruce Wayne in the face as Batman turns to walk away and contemplates the fate of several Robins killed by Joker. End of scene. It’s basically what we got in the finished cut, with a ‘We Live in a Society’ bloom. This final prologue shows Batman, Mera, Joker, Deathstroke and Flash trying to compete against Dark Superman and Darkseid in the Knightmare reality, what a Justice League 2 we will never get it. Probably. But you can never be so sure.
We Live in a Society is an iconic Joker meme dating back years on the internet. What started out as absurd humor has now turned into either a parody or a serious mantra, depending on which side of the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement you fall on. Until this point, here in this deleted scene, Joker, as a character, had never said a variation of the line, which is why it became so important when Jared Leto uttered the sentence in the main part. Snyder Cut trailer released months ago.
Zack Snyder shared the deleted extended ‘We Live in a Society’ scene to celebrate the release of his Justice League: Justice is Gray black and white edition that began streaming on HBO Max earlier this week.
