A few legendary monsters bring the box office back to life. Godzilla vs Kong raked in $ 9.6 million on opening day in theaters, which is the best opening day for all movies since theaters in the US and much of the world closed in March 2020. This is an exceptionally good sign for cinemas and studios and those eager to get back to the theatrical experience. The question now becomes: how much will the blockbuster bring in within its five-day opening window?
Godzilla to Kong open Wednesdays to take a leap over Easter weekend. It played in 2,409 theaters and averaged just under $ 4,000 per venue. That would be quite good by normal standards, but by pandemic standards nothing short of excellent. The film will also have its biggest opening since the theaters initially closed last year, with director Adam Wingard’s participation in the MonsterVerse expected to eventually play on approximately 3,000 screens in North America. Analysts had expected it to be able to make between $ 20 and $ 30 million on its domestic debut in the first five days. With the strong Wednesday figures, it could easily exceed that.
The box office numbers get all the more encouraging when you consider that Warner Bros. and Legendary’s big-budget monster beatdown is currently available to stream on HBO Max in the US Warner Bros. does this with all his films in 2020, with Wonder Woman 1984 The little things and Tom and Jerry already take the same hybrid route. If so, it further shows that people are ready to go back to the movies as health and safety concerns are slowly diminishing.
Word of mouth seems to benefit this film immensely. It currently has a critical approval rating of 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which equates to a stellar 95 percent audience rating. That’s the best thing about any MonsterVerse movie yet. It also beat out 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters to pick up an A Cinemascore. This is a crowd puller through and through.
It’s also important to note that Godzilla to Kong has had a great showing in cinemas overseas so far. It made more than $ 70 million during its opening weekend in China and has brought in more than $ 123 million overseas to date. Coupled with what looks set to be a great opening weekend in North America, it should be able to easily clear the $ 200 million global mark next Monday. To consider King of the monsters made $ 386 million worldwide throughout its run with a full, worldwide release, which is pretty impressive.
The cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Demian Bichir, Julian Dennison, Brian Tyree Henry and Eiza Gonzales. In the meantime, Adam Wingard has already prepared two major projects as a follow-up. It was recently announced that Wingard will release a Thunder cats film, besides Face / Off 2, which he is developing. This news was previously reported by Deadline.
