Demi and Max had only been dating for four months when he proposed and she said yes.
But for the right reasons she didn’t accept it, the artist explained that she was kidding herself into thinking she had to prove she was okay after her overdose and that this kind of dedication was the way to do it.
During an interview for Entertainment Weekly, Demi said that, “ I really fooled myself because it was the safe and expected thing. Obviously, I cared deeply about the person, but there was something in me that thought, “I need to prove to the world that I’m okay. Now that I’m no longer engaged or married and I’m fine, I’m like, “Wow. Isn’t that so much more empowering? “It’s not this false sense of security.”

The engagement ring played a part in how she fooled herself, too.
Dated that ‘the size of that ring made it feel really real. The second time it was out, I thought, ‘You know what? I’m doing well. I don’t need that. ‘I just don’t need an object on my finger to make me feel like I’ve got my s ** t together. It looks like stability, but that’s not to say it is. ‘
As for why she is no longer interested in marriage at this point, she explained, “ I don’t really grow through stability. I notice that I enjoy living not in chaos or crisis, but in fluidity. It is not stuck or stagnated in an ideal or tradition imposed on us by patriarchy. ‘
