After several decades, Steven Spielberg finally gets his Stephen King adaptation of his choice a reality. The iconic filmmaker has teamed up with Netflix to bring King’s The Talisman to the screen. However, it will be like a series and not a movie. The project had previously been considered a feature in its various iterations over the years. But now Spielberg is teaming up with the Duffer Brothers, or Weird stuff fame, to bring it to life as a show.
According to a new report, Steven Spielberg will produce The Talisman series alongside Ross Duffer and Matt Duffer. Curtis Gwinn, who previously worked with the Duffers Weird stuff, will serve as both writer and showrunner for the project. There’s no word yet on how soon this could go into production, but it appears to be in the very early stages. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will also produce with Spielberg.
This one took a long time. Steven Spielberg originally got the rights to Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel in 1982, a full two years before it was officially published. Since then, several iterations have come and gone, but nothing has blossomed. At one point, Josh Boone (The new mutants) was included to direct it like a movie. More recently, Mike Barker (The Handmaid’s Tale) was attached. But nothing came of that either.
The Talisman was originally published in 1984. It centers on a 12-year-old boy named Jack Sawyer who embarks on an epic quest, a walk from the New Hampshire seacoast to the California coast. Sawyer tries to find the talisman that will save his dying mother’s life. Jack’s journey takes him to the Territories, a parallel medieval universe where most of the people from his own universe have a counterpart known as ‘twinners’. Coincidentally, Jack’s mother’s twinner also dies.
Steven Spielberg remains busy as ever. The man behind Raiders of the Lost Ark Jurassic Park and many other classics that have run out of the most recently packaged production West Side Story remake. It will currently hit theaters in December. Whether or not Spielberg will step behind the camera for the Netflix series remains to be seen. As for the Duffer Brothers, they are currently in production on Weird stuff season 4, which is also expected to arrive sometime this year.
