Tom and Jerry wins this weekend’s box office battle after earning $ 13.7 million. The latest release from Warner Bros. has scored the pandemic’s second-most profitable debut. It was estimated that the family film would net just over $ 12 million, but it could exceed expectations. Wonder Woman 1984 still holds the record for best pandemic debut at $ 16.4 million. Both films are from Warner Bros. and were released in theaters on the same day and on HBO Max. Worldwide, Tom and Jerry was able to bring in $ 38 million.
Warner Bros. writes part of the Tom and Jerry success for families from all over the country renting out movie theaters for private screenings. According to the studio, there were more than $ 10,000 in private theater performances of the animated live-action hybrid this weekend. The box office numbers for all films are expected to improve in the coming months thanks to the vaccine. At the time of writing, just under 50% of all North American movie theaters are open, but more are set to open in the coming weeks.
The Croods: A New Age came in at number two at the box office this weekend with $ 1.2 million. The animated family movie has been a regular earner at the box office since it debuted 14 weeks ago. To date, the film has earned $ 156.1 million worldwide. The little things came in at number three after bringing in $ 925K. At the time of writing, the film has made just over $ 23 million worldwide. Wonder Woman 1984 stayed at number four this weekend with $ 710K.
The sniper was able to stay at number five this weekend after bringing in $ 700,000. The thriller starring Liam Neeson has made just under $ 16 million worldwide in its seven weeks in theaters. Judas and the Black Messiah took sixth place after bringing in $ 500K. The film was critically acclaimed and earned Daniel Kaluuya Best Supporting Actor nominations at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Monster Hunter took seventh place this weekend with $ 460K, while Robin Wright’s long directorial debut, Country took eighth place with $ 355,000. Wright’s debut takes place after a woman has a near-death experience in the wilderness. She then tries to live comfortably again. Tom Hanks’ News of the world came in at number nine this weekend after earning $ 200K. The movie is also currently being streamed. And last but not least, The war with grandpa holds tenth place with $ 137K. Robert De Niro’s comedy has been in theaters for 21 weeks and is currently available on Blu-ray.
