We are still waiting for the long-discussed Spawn movie reboot but now, Todd McFarlane alludes to a possible Spawn cinematic universe. Yes, it looks like the creator of the character and the man behind Image Comics has his sights set on something bigger. The question is: does Hollywood feel like it?
Todd McFarlane recently announced a full Spawn universe launches this summer on Image Comics. It includes several new titles such as King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and a team book titled The scorchedThat opens up an entire universe, just like Marvel and DC have been doing for decades. But with Marvel locked in by Disney and DC at Warner Bros, other studios have to move elsewhere if they hope to get a comic book movie universe going. SpawnMcFarlane seemed to suggest in a recent interview, could be an option. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“I’ve had this conversation with people inside and outside the comics industry, I’ve warmed up my Hollywood agents to it too, also because the big question is, are we still doing Spawn The Movie or are we offering something bigger than that? otherwise the only other option is you take your five best characters and sell them to five different people and they do five separate things and never the two will meet Wouldn’t it be better if one person, if one group came and said, ‘hey you know, that’s interesting talking to us, and oh, by the way, at least Spawn is at the epicenter now, so we’re getting a lot of value just for that one character, talk to us about everyone else.’ ‘
Blumhouse Productions has struck a deal for the R-rated Spawn reboot, which will play Jamie Foxx in the title role. Jeremy Renner is also attached, and Todd McFarlane plans to direct himself. As McFarlane points out, if these characters are licensed to different studios, there’s a cinematic universe off the table. But if they get one universe to go all in with what Image Comics is on the way? The Spawn cinematic universe could, and we emphasize could, be one thing.
But the first is first. We must have at least one Spawn movie in the world. Todd McFarlane discussed in the same interview where that project is currently located. A lot is happening, but it cannot be formally announced yet.
“During the pandemic, things progressed behind the scenes of the Spawn movie, but those moves haven’t gone public. We’ve added some great creative people, we’ve added some top talent, and even just a week ago, another big piece in place and so we all get moving as much as possible to try to come up with a major move Our goals, by mid-year, are that we can go public. The thing that anyone cares about is not announcing some of the names I can’t announce right now, but it’s’ oh by the way, they sold it to a studio and yeah, at least somebody wrote in pencil somewhere that they’re going to start production at some point. “
A previous Spawn film was produced in 1997. It was panned by critics and not so commercially successful. But a lot has changed over the decades, and Todd McFarlane has some ambitious stuff brewing. We’ll keep you posted when more details about the movie, or maybe movies, become available. This news comes to us through Bleeding Cool.
