Having previously collaborated on four classic films, John Carpenter says he would love to work with Kurt Russell again someday. Forty years ago this summer, Carpenter cast Russell in the much-loved science fiction action movie Escape from New YorkOver the next few years, Russell would appear in a sequel to that movie, along with other Carpenter classics such as The thing and Big Trouble in Little China
Speaking about his career in a recent interview with NME, Carpenter was asked if there was anyone in particular he would like to work with on a future film project. After naming Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams as two people he’d love to work with, Carpenter reveals he’s very open to collaboration Kurt Russell again on something new if you get the chance. As the filmmaker explains in the interview:
“There’s a lot I haven’t worked with. Jennifer Lawrence, she’s a brilliant actress. Amy Adams – brilliant actress. I’d love to work with them, but chances are slim. You just don’t know what’s going to happen. I would love to work with Kurt Russell again. That would be nice. We had such a great time working together. “
After starring as favorite action hero Snake Plissken in 1981 Escape from New York, Russell reprized the role in the 1996 sequel Escape from L.A.After the first time they teamed up, Carpenter was eager to do this again, as Russell also included R.J. MacReady in the hit horror movie The thing, which was released just a year later Escape from New YorkThe 1986 movie Big Trouble in Little China is another cult classic that remains one of John Carpenter’s best-loved films to this day.
Carpenter has not been in the director’s chair for over ten years and released his last film The district back in 2010. While that’s certainly a long time, Carpenter is far from retired, as he’s since teased a return to directing if the right project comes along. Speaking to The Daily Beast last month, Carpenter said fans might see another movie of his soon, but not until it’s safe for the 73-year-old to interact safely with a cast and crew on a movie set.
“Maybe [see me direct again]I’m working on a few things. But I don’t do anything for a while until the world comes back and makes itself rights. It’s insane now. It’s crazy! I’m not going there to get sick, ”Carpenter explained.
It may take a while for Carpenter to be ready to direct again, but he has continued to work on his music throughout the pandemic. His latest album, Lost Themes III: Alive After Death, was released just earlier this month. The album is the filmmaker and musician’s fourth in just six years. He also contributed to the score of Halloween Kills, which will be released on October 15, 2021. You can watch the full interview with Carptner at NME.
