When a movie becomes the highest grossing movie of all time, you will experience a lot of memorable moments in the story that will remain with audiences for a long time to come. Avengers: Endgame has plenty of moments like that, but perhaps the one that gets the most cheers is when Captain America lifts Thor’s enchanted hammer Mjolnir to fight Thanos. In a recent interview, Joe Russo, who co-directed the movie with his brother Anthony, called it his own, compared to watching boxing icon Rocky Balboa get up off the mat for the twelfth round of a fight.
Probably Cap with the hammer [is our favorite scene from the film]because that is the full circle for us. We worked with that character for a long time and it was a great reward for him as a character. The way Evans played that character is so honest. It’s one of the great characters in movie history because of his performance that you just want to see him win, you know? You just want to root for this guy. And that’s when the tide turned in that fight, and you know, it’s like Rocky comes off the mat in lap 12. It just inspires you. “
The Russos are far from the first to praise Cap’s moment with Mjolnir. In fact, that scene is in Endgame was chosen to be part of Empire’s “The Greatest Cinema Moments Ever”. When Evans was asked to help select the scene for the list, the actor admitted that even he is suffocated watching the audience’s reaction to the entire series.
“The first time I saw Endgame was at the premiere. Normally I see the movies I’m working on well in advance, and I rarely attend premieres (too much fear). But being the last leg of a ten-year journey, I wanted to experience this last film in the same way as the audience. When Cap lifted Mjölnir, our theater went crazy. Although I knew the moment was coming, I still got emotional. In the weeks that followed, friends and family sent me clips from theaters around the world that are currently losing their collective mess. When I saw those reactions and knew I was lucky enough to be a part of those memories for those people, I felt proud and grateful that I could never will be to express well. In those moments I’m not an actor, or even an adult; I’m a little kid again, completely captivated by the power and magic that movies can wield. Damn … I get into confused. “
