A rare collection of first edition James Bond books are currently on sale and it represents one of the holy grails for MI6 agent fans. But the novels written by Ian Fleming don’t come cheap. The whole set will cost you more than $ 600,000. One would have to be Goldfinger rich for this to be a practical purchase.
The collection includes first editions of all 14 original James Bond books from Ian Fleming, starting with 1953’s Casino generous. They even include the original dust jackets, which is a rarity. What makes this collection even more impressive is that ten of the 14 books feature inscriptions from Fleming to different people, ranging from ex-girlfriends to professional golfers. Bookseller Dr. John Atkinson helped put together the collection, which comes with a price tag of approximately $ 613,890 in US dollars. Atkinson had this to say.
“[Fleming] knew the value of books when they were signed and he was quite thrifty when writing books to people. I think it’s fair to say he only wrote books for people he liked. “
Ian Fleming’s works went on to inspire one of the most enduring figures in film history. Sean Connery played Bond, aka 007, in 1962 Dr. No. The franchise has continued ever since, spanning more than five decades, and has grossed billions at the box office. That makes these books quite important pieces of pop culture history. As for the inscriptions, Casino generous was signed to one of Fleming’s friends. Atkinson had this to say about it.
“Her name was Lisl Popper and was Austrian. He met her in a bar in Kitzbuhel when he was 19 and she tripped him up, which he thought was hilarious. They had a bond all their lives and she was one of the people he left ӰǺ in his will. “
A collection like this doesn’t just come together. It took several years to put the books together, and it took a worldwide effort to complete the task. John Atkinson explained how they got it done.
“We took them from all over the world and put them together, from auctions and private sales. We struggled a few here and there from private collections.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig’s James Bond returns No time to die. The 25th Bond movie has been postponed several times. Most recently, as the box office was still relatively slow, MGM pushed back the movie to October of this year. It was previously scheduled to arrive in April.
You would expect a collection like this to be sold at auction. But that is not the case. Instead, John Atkinson sells the James Bond books through his shop. They are currently being held in a secret, secure location. Since the earlier books were printed in shorter editions, very few first editions are available. Especially the ones in this state. This news comes to us through the BBC.
