Celebrated horror filmmaker John Carpenter is known for many classic cult movies. But the Halloween franchise is perhaps the most successful of the lot. The 2018 restart of Halloween saw Carpenter return to the world of infamous serial killer Michael Myers as an executive producer and music composer. The upcoming sequel, Halloween kills, will also feature Carpenter’s music. The experienced filmmaker thought so in an interview with EW Halloween kills represents the pinnacle of the horror slasher genre.
‘It’s brilliant. It’s the ultimate slasher. I mean there is nothing more than this. Wow! Man.’
While many were skeptical when it was announced that director David Gordon Green will be making a new one Halloween film in 2018, fans were encouraged when it was revealed that the film would be a direct sequel to the original Halloween, again starring Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode.
The film turned out to be a critical and commercial hit, showing Laurie in a much more heroic brighter light than as a victim. While we’re on the follow up, Halloween killsCurtis has stated in a previous interview that the upcoming film, in which Laurie and her entire town will take a final stand against the evil Michael Myers, is a “masterpiece.”
“What we saw all over the country of the power, the fury of voices, large groups of people gathering in rage about the circumstances, that’s what the movie is. The movie is about a crowd. And so it’s very interesting because it involves about what happens when trauma infects a whole community And we see it everywhere with the Black Lives Matter movement, we see it in action and Halloween kills strangely, tie in with that, got on with it, it was written before that happened, but then of course, so when you see it, it’s a swirling group of people moving through the story like a big angry group, it’s really, very , very intense. It’s a masterpiece. “
While Carpenter seems happy with the new take on Halloween, fans have long begged the filmmaker to start making films again. In a previous interview, Carpenter had explained that the process of directing a movie is difficult for him, but there are a number of projects in the works.
“[Directing is] stressful, it’s physically difficult, it’s tough, and you have to be a certain kind of person to love it. And I’m not sure I am. I like it, but not in an ego way. Music is, in a way, much more satisfying because it is there. It’s right in front of you, and you don’t have to wait for it to be cut together and deal with an arsenal of people who make movies … I’m working on a few things. But I don’t do anything for a while until the world comes back and makes itself rights. It’s insane now. It’s crazy! I’m not going there to get sick. “
Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan and Chris Bernier, Halloween kills stars Curtis, Andi Matichak and Judy Greer. The film will hit theaters on October 15, 2021. Watch Carpenter’s entire interview at EW.
