Michelle Pfeiffer says she turned it down Silence of the lambs because it was “too bad”. Director Jonathan Demme wanted her to star as Clarice Starling, but Pfeiffer wasn’t interested. Jodie Foster eventually took on the role, earning her an Academy Award. Pfeiffer and Demme had worked on it before Married to the mafia together and the actress regrets that she did not get a second chance to work with the director again. Demme died in 2017 of complications from esophageal cancer and heart disease.
The silence of the lambs is not exactly an uplifting story. The film, and source material, Thomas Harris’ novel of the same name, tells the story of a young FBI agent who follows a serial killer who skins his female victims. When Michelle Pfeiffer read the script, thought it was a little too much for her to record. She explains.
“With The silence of the lambs, I was apprehensive. There was so much evil in that movie. What I regret most is missing the opportunity to make another movie with Jonathan [Demme]. It was that evil won in the end, which ruled out evil at the end of that movie. I was uncomfortable with that ending. I didn’t want to put that in the world. “
The silence of the lambs ends with the Dr. Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter who escapes from his cell and disappears. He later contacts Clarice Starling at her graduation party from the FBI Academy to congratulate her, before telling him to hang up because he “has an old friend for dinner.” It’s a chilling ending, and you can see why Michelle didn’t cast Pfeiffer in the role of Starling.
When Michelle Pfeiffer talks about Jonathan Demme now, she thinks about how much fun they had working Married to the mafia together. “I find it so sad that he is no longer here,” says Pfeiffer. “First of all, he’s the nicest person, he’s funny, and not only is he very funny, but he’s the easiest person to laugh at, so we just laugh all the time.” The actress noticed that Married to the mafia was quite demanding, but states that she just got into her character, which in the end made everything much easier.
The silence of the lambs earned Jonathan Demme an Academy Award for Best Director. The film also won Best Picture, with Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster taking home Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. Ted Tally won Best Screenplay for his work on the film. Michelle Pfeiffer continued to achieve success in her career, including the role of Selena Kyle, aka Catwoman, in 1992 Batman returns. When asked recently if she would play a role The flash film alongside her longtime co-star Michael Keaton, she stated that no one had contacted her, although she would be interested. The interview with Michelle Pfeiffer was originally conducted by The New Yorker.
