Although the Godzilla Vs. Kong trailer for the latest entry in Legendary’s MonsterVerse arrived extremely late, the epicness of the footage made up for the delay. Fans on social media can’t stop gushing about the impressive footage of the film, which sees the two most iconic movie monsters in the cinema together in the throats. One of those fans is Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who posted his reaction to the trailer on Twitter and expressed a desire to see the MonsterVerse intersect with his own. Pacific Rim franchise.
“Personally, I love seeing the Neon, naval battles, building demolitions, etc., because secretly -perhaps- the PAC RIM universe co-exists in the LEGENDARY Kaijuverse and maybe one day they can mess!”
2013’s Pacific Rim was del Toro’s love letter to Japanese monster cinema and anime. The movie saw humanity build giant robots known as Jaegers to fight against monstrous creatures invading Earth from another planet. Unfortunately, Guillermo del Toro left the franchise after the first film. When a fan asked the filmmaker if he would be interested in returning to the series to make a movie that pits the Jaegers against Kong and Godzilla, del Toro had a straight answer.
“Talk only like a fan by the way – NO plans to return.”
What makes the possibility of a Pacific Rim/ MonsterVerse crossover is especially tempting the fact that the two franchises are both owned by Legendary. The MonsterVerse movies are often criticized for featuring boring human characters that have no effect on the monsters or the plot of the movies.
But that opinion would change pretty quickly if the people got Jaeger technology to punch Godzilla in the mouth the next time he tries to use his atomic breathing. Pacific Rim: Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight has previously confirmed that Legendary forces are aware of the potential for the two Kaiju franchises to merge, and a crossover movie is a clear possibility.
“There is a lot of debate about that possibility [of crossing over]. See, I think it would be fantastic if the Pacific Rim universe joined Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie that we talked about is that it can happen, it’s always a possibility. It is far from certain; it’s just theoretical at the moment, but as a fan I’d love to see that happen. “
For now, Godzilla and King Kong don’t have to worry about Jaegers, but a different kind of giant mechanical monster in the form of Mechagodzilla, as the directions in the trailer for Godzilla Vs Kong are an indication. Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla to Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film will be released in theaters on March 26 and on HBO Max.
