Disney is following in the footsteps of MGM, Universal and Sony are postponing their Q1 releases. The King’s Man, Ron has gone wrong, Antlers, and more have been delayed while the long-awaited Bob’s Burgers film has completely taken the release slate off the ground. About whether or not Marvel Studios will arrive Black Widow movie will be delayed, that has yet to be confirmed. However, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige says it’s a real possibility.
Bob’s Burgers was originally scheduled to open in theaters in April, but it no longer has a release date. It’s unclear whether Disney will announce a new date, or if the movie will go straight to streaming instead. The King’s Man (20th) was previously scheduled for release on March 12 and is now moving to August 20. The film was originally scheduled to open on November 15, 2019, but was initially delayed to February 14, 2020. It was then pushed to September 18, 2020, before being released in February 2021. Hopefully the August date will be kept.
Ron has gone wrong (20th) was previously scheduled to open on April 23 and is now moving to October 22. The animated film is about an 11-year-old boy who notices that his robot buddy isn’t quite working. The Night House (Searchlight) is now dated July 16. The horror thriller is directed by David Bruckner from a screenplay by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It stars Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Stacy Martin, Evan Jonigkeit and Vondie Curtis-Hall. Tammy Faye’s eyes (Searchlight) now opens in limited theaters on September 24, while the long-delayed Antlers (Searchlight) is now dated October 29. Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley opens December 3.
Raya and the last dragon will premiere on March 5 as a Disney + Premium purchase, which they did with the live-action Mulan film in 2020. At time of writing, Marvel’s Black Widow will stay until May 7, but that will likely change. Free guy is still fixed on May 21, while Cruella stays until May 28. Pixar’s Luca is scheduled to open in theaters on June 18 and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stays at July 9. Jungle Cruise is still on July 30th.
A lot will likely change in the coming weeks regarding these release dates. Thanks to the public health crisis, more than 60% of North American movie theaters remain closed with no end in sight. With that being said, President Joe Biden wants to have 100 million vaccinations in 100 days. The goal of the new president is lofty, but he and his team seem confident that they will be able to achieve it and bring the country back to some form of normalcy in the coming months. Walt Disney Studios was the first to announce the new Q1 release dates.
