The batter spin-off aimed at the Gotham P.D. in development for HBO Max has found new creative blood. Joe Barton, the creator of Girl / Haji, has been tapped as the new showrunner for the upcoming DC project. Earlier, Terence Winter, or The Sopranos fame, was on board to direct the show, which will take place in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie. Now it’s up to Barton to create the accompaniment to Robert Pattinson’s debut as the Dark Knight.
According to multiple reports, Joe Barton has signed up as the new showrunner for the currently untitled series. Terence Winter was on board the series when it was first announced last July. But he left a few months ago due to creative disagreements. With Matt Reeves on board as a major producer, the show was ordered direct to series for HBO Max and will exist in the same universe as The batter. It takes place before the events of the film in Batman’s first year of crime fighting in Gotham City. The film, as Reeves previously revealed, will take place in the second year of the superhero’s exploits.
It is a big performance for Joe Barton who has to tackle something as controversial as this during his career. Barton is best known for writing BBC and Netflix programs Girl / Haji, which debuted in 2019. Some of his other credits are the horror movie The ritual, also made for Netflix, as well Our world war and People. Barton is also writing the upcoming science fiction movie Invasion, starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer.
Plot details for the series are largely kept secret for the time being. It is said that the show will further explore Gotham City as it exists in this universe. Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will exist outside of the established DCEU continuity. This will be part of the larger DC multiverse. It remains unclear whether any actors from the film will appear, such as Pattinson. But that would make sense since they occupy the same space. Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon The batter, also seems a logical choice. The show runs under the working title “Gotham Central”, but officially remains unnamed. They can’t just go along Gotham, as the Fox-produced show that lasted 100 episodes beat them.
This is part of a larger strategy at WarnerMedia and DC Films. The idea will be to have DC movies and spin-offs that could exist on HBO Max. The studio is looking to expand the scope of the universe in hopes of bolstering subscribers to the streaming service, which launched last year. Wonder Woman 1984 really boosted the subscriber division, so shows like this might do the same. There’s no word yet on when the show will start. The batter will currently hit theaters on March 4, 2022. This news comes to us through The Hollywood Reporter.
