Writer, actress and comedian Mindy Kaling has provided an update on the status of the highly anticipated sequel, Legally Blonde 3. Kaling was brought aboard the project Brooklyn Nine-Nine producer Dan Goor to write the script, with Kaling revealing that the film will explore who Elle is at 40 compared to her 21-year-old original self, and that several Easter eggs and running gags will make a comeback for the threequel.
“I can’t wait to see what people think. How Elle Woods is 40 versus when she was 21 was a lot of fun to imagine. Hopefully. I don’t know when we can make movies again. This year would be great. I can’t wait for you to see this movie. “
Mindy Kaling goes on to reveal that yes, the Bend and Snap will be back for this next sequel. Along with many other fan favorite call backs and Easter eggs.
“Bend and Snap is forever. We certainly have a lot of fan favorites from the original. We still will.”
In addition to revealing some scant details, Kaling said the ideal situation is still to shoot the film sometime this year, and they still have plans for a 2022 release. However, the actress stated that this all depends on factors over which she has largely no control, such as the ongoing global situation. Not only will the production team have to figure out how to shoot the film amid the changing circumstances and regulations that are now required, but Kaling also revealed that she will also need to have the script approved by star and executive producer Reese Witherspoon. Given her passion for the franchise, this is unlikely to be a problem.
“I love the franchise so much. I love Elle Woods as a character and when Reese asked me to write it I was like ‘Absolutely!'”
Kaling has become a household name in comedy in recent years, thanks to roles in The Mindy Project, as well as recently co-created the critically acclaimed Netflix comedy series Never have I ever which follows the complicated life of a modern Indian-American teenage girl of the first generation and is inspired by Mindy Kaling’s own childhood.
Fans of Reese Witherspoon’s delightfully ditzy Elle Woods have been waiting for some time for a third gig, with the film officially starting development in 2018. The script is currently being written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, with Reese Witherspoon also on board to rehearse her. role as lawyer Elle Woods, and produced through her Hello Sunshine studio with original producer of the franchise Marc Platt.
Witherspoon previously commented on the return of Legally blonde on social media, with the actress clearly being extremely enthusiastic about the project, as well as the involvement of both Kaling and Goor. “Good news! Some things are just meant to be that way! I’m SOOO excited to have @MindyKaling and #DanGoor write Legally Blonde 3! This is #ElleWoodsApproved!” she said earlier this year about the upcoming sequel.
The original Legally blonde came out in 2001 and has since become something of a cult classic. The film, directed by Robert Luketic, follows Elle after her boyfriend breaks up with a smarter girl to help his political ambitions and Harvard Law education. To teach him a lesson, Elle is enrolled in the same school and discovers she has an affinity for the law while overcoming stereotypes against blondes. It’s been 18 years now since the sequel, Legally Blond 2: Red, White and Blonde with an audience that is undoubtedly ready to go on another adventure with the eternally cheerful Elle.
