HBO Max has released the first trailer for Locked. This is one of many Hollywood projects filmed against all odds during quarantine. Director Doug Liman (Edge of tomorrow, American made) is at the helm of the heist thriller, with a cast led by Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, Ocean 8) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange, 12 years of slave). As the trailer reveals, the film takes advantage of the time we live in by inventing a crime that can only happen when the world is shut down.
The trailer opens with Paxton from Chiwetel Ejiofor having a video chat with some friends. He is locked in with his partner, Linda, played by Anne Hathaway. But there are problems in paradise. As things go from bad to worse, the warring couple devise an ambitious plan to steal an incredibly valuable diamond while the world is different. Despite reflecting the harsh conditions many of us are currently dealing with, the trailer tries to bring in some humor along with the theft.
Steven Knight (Locke, Pawn Sacrifice) wrote the screenplay. PJ. van Sandwijk, Alison Winter and Michael Lesslie are on board as producers. Stephen Merchant (Logan, Jojo Rabbit), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Sing Street), Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island, Iron Man 3), Mindy Kaling (Late at night, The office), Ben Stiller (Night at the museum, tropical thunder) and Dule Hill (Psych, Ballers) round off the ensemble.
Doug Liman last directed American made. Then he switched to the YA adjustment Chaos running, starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland. It’s been delayed several times, but will eventually arrive later this year. Some of Liman’s other credits include The Bourne Identity and Sweater. Liman is also set to direct Tom Cruise in a movie that will be shot partially in space, as well Edge of tomorrow 2.
Locked is about Linda (Anne Hathaway) and Paxton (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who have just decided to divorce. But they soon discover that life has other plans because they are trapped in a mandatory lockdown at home. Living together appears to be a challenge. Driven by poetry and a lot of wine, however, they come closer together in the most surprising way.
Anne Hathaway already had one big movie country on HBO Max with The witches. The Oscar winner also starred in recently Dark waters, The Hassle and The last thing he wanted. As for Chiwetel Ejiofor, the Oscar nominee has starred in several big, recent hits, including The lionking, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and The old guard. Ejiofor is currently preparing for his role as Mordo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Originally titled LockdownWarner Bros. took the rights to the project last year during the Toronto film market. Production took place in London during quarantine, similar to Michael Bay’s Songbird, which arrived late last year. Locked arrives on the HBO Max streaming app on January 14.
