Anyone who thought the MCU might not be able to trump the excellence they served in their Phase III should immediately check out the trailer for the highly anticipated Disney + series Loki featuring MCU’s beloved villain, the infamous God of Mischief himself. It’s a treasure trove of wonders, but what makes fans pluck their jaws off the floor is a flashing scene towards the end in the trailer – a quick shot of the back of a lonely figure who looks a lot like Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff aka. Black Widow to whom we say a heartbreaking goodbye Avengers: Endgame.
The last time we saw Natasha, it was her who sacrificed herself on the bare planet of Vormir so Hawkeye could get the Soul Stone, bring back his family dusted off by Thanos, and finally move on with his life. All we have now is it slowed down exceptionally Black Widow that is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and is intended to provide a detailed introduction to who Natasha Romanoff was. While, as a prequel, Black Widow hopes not to see the super spy in future projects, the trailer Loki certainly does.
At 2:03 a.m. in the trailer, we see a woman’s back sitting amid high piles of rubble with her back to the camera. The purple light and the surroundings make it look like the place in the scene is the planet Vormir. But what catches our attention is the fact that the figure is dressed in an all-black attire much like Natasha’s iconic black costume, along with her classic bob haircut that she had again. The Avengers and later in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Natasha is back from the dead.
It is an earlier version of Black Widow
Let’s back up for a moment. Our last sighting of Loki was during Endgame when Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of the team went back to different years in the past in their quest to secure the Infinity Stones before the Mad Titan did and undo his break in the present. But their first attempt to get hold of the Space Stone hidden in the Tesseract got Hulk punch, allowing the God of Mischief to escape through a portal.
Into the story Loki will start right after this point, meaning it will start in 2012. So not only is this Loki a far cry from the brave, selfless hero he became in the original timeline, it also means that there is a very living Black Widow that is years away from her death in 2023. So it could be her earlier version. that takes place in a different timeline, in Loki but it would still mean it marks the return of Scarlett Johannsson, so it’s still a win-win for her fans.
The AU version of Black Widow
Much of the trailer also tackles Loki getting caught up in the TVA, the Time Variance Authority – a bureaucracy that rules countless realities. This means it could very well be an alternate version of Natasha living alone on the planet Vormir. Since the trailer also features scenes from a post-apocalyptic New York, chances are the Avengers failed to find that one winning way out of the fourteen million failed methods of defeating Thanos. Maybe it is the reality that holds Tony Stark’s vision Age of Ultron (induced by Wanda) comes out – Earth’s heroes have been defeated and the planet burned to the ground.
It’s the Black Widow of the original timeline
Remember in Endgame how Hulk struggled to make the break after wearing the glove and later confessed to Cap that it was because he tried to reverse Natasha’s death but failed. Call it daydreaming, but maybe he managed to bring her back, just not as he expected. Since the purple-colored background and Vormir-esque setting are rather difficult to ignore, it is possible that part of Natasha is back but bound to the planet and unable to leave.
There is also the possibility that it is not Black Widow
Basing our speculation on what the figure looks like from behind, we have another contender: Lady Loki who will reportedly be played by Sophie Di Martino in the series. The actor was added to the cast of the series in 2019 and at the time of her casting, Deadline had reported that there is a possibility that she will play the female version of the Asgardian prince.
While details of her role in the film still remain classified, leaked set photos from the series production earlier in 2020 seemed to confirm that Martino will indeed appear as Lady Loki on the show. She was spotted wearing a black and green suit which is just a slightly modified version of Loki’s early costume in the MCU. Add to that the fact that her blonde hair is styled the same way as Natasha’s. While the figure we see in the trailer appears to have red hair, the purple lighting could be the hair of Martino a.k.a. Lady Loki looks reddish brown.
Although Lady Loki has not yet been portrayed in the MCU, comic book fans already know very well how she came to be. Known for his shape-shifting abilities, Loki took on a human body intended for the spirit of Lady Sif in J. Michael Straczynski, Olivier Coipel and Marko Djurdjevic’s released in 2008 Thor comic series and thus Lady Loki was born. While she’s just another form of Loki in the comics, given the multiverse angle Marvel Studios is currently looking for, if she shows up she’ll emerge from an alternate reality where Laufey’s son is actually a woman.
But nothing can be said for certain, especially regarding the Black Widow’s possible return, as Marvel has used fake scenes in trailers of the MCU movies in the past and perhaps raising the possibility of the Avenger’s return is just one illusion – only the release of Loki in 2021 can decipher the mystery.
